A VILLAGE hall and a steam railway museum might seem unlikely beneficiaries of one of Britain’s most successful rock groups but the two are poised for a surprise windfall from the riches of pop.

On Saturday, Colchester’s most famous musical sons Blur will kick-off their UK tour in a shed at the East Anglian Railway Museum, a train buff’s paradise in the village of Wakes Colne.

The museum, based in the former Chappel and Wakes Colne Station, was the unlikely birthplace of Blur, who, according to showbiz legend, made their debut there in 1988.

The two-hour set will be so *exclusive that tickets have been limited to just 150 people.

Most of those will be friends and family but 26 pairs are being sold on the band’s website by *raffle tickets at £5 each.

It is that raffle which could raise many thousands of pounds, which will be split between the museum and the roof restoration project for the hall at nearby *Aldham, the village where lead *singer Damon Albarn grew up.

Karen Nelson, a volunteer at the museum, said: “They have asked to change in an old brake van and Damon’s mum and their other guests will be seated in a train wagon. I think that their stage will be a normal one though.”

When I went to EARM over three years ago it was a glorified scrapyard and was the most boring railway museum I'd ever been to.
