According to a report in the Bucks Free press newspaper, strange blue lights seen in the sky the other evening over parts of Oxfordshire and Bucks were cashed by a train shining a blue light from its roof. Any ideas what this train was?

VIDEO: Train causes strange 'blue UFO' across Bucks and Oxfordshire

The mystery of the strange blue glow seen moving through the skies over Buckinghamshire on Wednesday night appears to have been solved.

And is seems it was not down to aliens - despite a wave of rumours on social media.

Pictures emerged from across the county of an eerie blue light travelling slowly overhead.

Lots of theories have been put forward, including a UFO, blue alien eyes and light pollution.

The blue light moved across the sky and was spied from Chinnor and Thame to High Wycombe and Gerrards Cross, as well as in Oxfordshire.

However, a video has emerged which appears to show the cause of the blue glow.
This CCTV video, posted on Facebook by Shelley Ifill, captures a train moving at speed at 9.15pm on Wednesday with a blue light shining from the roof towards the sky.

It's not yet known exactly where the video was shot.
Rail companies have been contacted to establish which train was carrying the powerful beam, and why.

The NMT was in the area during last week, so if it's from any rail mounted vehicle it'll be that. I don't recall the Structure gauging train back in the area.

Almost certainly the Structure Gauging Train, which emits a blue laser.

EDIT: Actually, don't think that train was in the area. But still probably a NR data collection train of some kind.

It doesn't look anything like a UFO.

It's an unusual light in the sky, but not an object.

The New Measurement Train does have laser equipment on the roof to monitor the overhead catenary system. It records the position of the overhead wire and checks to ensure it is within certain parameters for pantographs to work properly.

I was priviledged a few weeks ago to visit the NMT on one of its trips and saw this system in operation between Stoke and Crewe.

I suspect it is the Structural Gauging train NOT the New Measurement train ?

It's not - I was able to look at diagrams and ask someone who works on it. ;)

The Structural Gauging train emits a light blue laser in all directions, not a royal blue light upwards only.

Why would the NMT be shining upwards in Bucks and Oxfordshire when there isn't any electrification there?

I would guess that the laser system is used to measure the distance to anything that might impinge on the gauging limits. So the fact that there's no OHLE at that location doesn't really matter as it'll be measuring the distance to things such as bridges and trees that are above the line.

And the clouds, perhaps? ;)

I'm guessing it's this thing here, Aka 'dusty bin'

There used to be the optical car before, which just shone a very bright white light, I seem to recall. Some piccies and things here:

It's quite remarkable how much the technology has changed from a whole vehicle, so something the size of a bin!

Your video was linked on Monday. Subsequent posters obviously didn't believe it then. We seem to be going round in circles here...

The staff were told that all the information would be uploaded to the cloud and misunderstood :E
