Despite the end of 'hostilities' within DBS, and despite BLS finding an alternative facilitator - WCR - for said tour, NR have advised them that due to the workload in their planning office - they be unable to cope !
Consequently, all monies received and cashed, will now be returned.
They still hope to run a similar tour some time next year.

Yes this DBS ASLEF dispute still seems to cause problems, I was due to travel to Kingswear today from Paddington, but was informed a few days ago that the train was cancelled, which is a great shame as it's a great journey down there along the coast, especially with steam which is what I had booked. I could not go the following day as they suggested, although I see the trip may run late March next year.

Refunds for this tour were due to be handed out last Saturday - 13/10/12 - to those who had also booked to be on the BLS Hunterston Tracker railtour.

Refunds for those not booked on the above tour were to be posted out soon after.

So an email sent to all concerned claimed - a fortnight back.

Alas, an informant now tells us that no such handover took place on the above tour. The excuse being given claims their to be no BLS Treasurer currently - the former having resigned upon the ousting of Norman 'Gas' Hill - last April.

This begs the question - who then cashed in the cheques sent out with the Lowland Tracker bookings - and what has become of the money ?

Rumour has it that there will be no exact or even close 're-run' next year - requested tracks within the Immingham Docklands and Scunthorpe Steelworks areas - no longer being available. No reason given.

This begs a further question - can the BLS be trusted - with promised railtours and other peoples money ?

I think Graeme Jolley said on the Hunterston tour that the cheques had been paid in the day before the cancellation.

As I've said before, tour loadings are not good. Previously there were waiting lists for tours, whereas on Saturday we only had 7 coaches. (Coming out of Bo'ness with 26024 and 26038 on the front, we nearly had more locos than coaches :))

I can't decide whether to attend the BLS AGM next month. If it's as antagonistic as the SGM, with people jumping up and shouting "point of order" every two minutes, I might not bother!

The rumours I heard on Saturday was that the Lowland Tracker would run as soon as possible - February 2013 was mooted, though I believe both it and December Kent outing hang in the balance. Like I said though, rumours.

Mr Hill's departure (isn't he called Nigel BTW?) caused quite a lot of obvious problems with the Society, however I'm sure it was mentioned on Saturday about what the latest is, maybe someone else will know!

Far more worrying for me personally are the loadings - the 156 to PeakRail and the MRC-B back in August was a sell-out however Saturday saw the first offer of paying on the day I can remember: Mr Hill's tours used to be sell-outs months beforehand, and often had a waiting list a few dozen names long!

Except for the last one to Scotland. Perhaps getting to Scotland for some people (time and/or expense) is a limiting factor for railtours these days. It was for me as I had to be at work at silly hour on the Sunday dahn sarf.

I thought pay on the day was a regime change promise?

I note that the BLS's planned 29 December tour around Kent has been postponed until 2013, yet more planning trouble from what I can gather.

(Don't worry QJ, no money was taken! ;))

Matt,

You do seem to have a chip on your shoulder. It isn't as if it is the first time an aspiration by rail tour organisers (be they a Commercial or family run Business, a Society or an individual) to run a tour has had to be postponed, shelved or radically amended for whatever reason. I would expect when this happens that the organiser would be in a position to reimburse the full amount of any monies received through any accepted bookings.

I applaud those organisers that share their plans in advance on the proviso that unforseen circumstances may mean changes are forced on them. It helps me arranging my diary to fit in with my hectic lifestyle. As the 29th December BLS trip wasn't advertised to run for definite or tickets put on sale I wouldn't count it as a cancellation myself.

Pathfinder, UKR and the other major railtour players are not immune to having plans thwarted. I am not sure why you think the BLS should be any different.

Hopefullly the Hastings unit will be fit and well in 2013. It is a long time since I last had a spin in one. I always enjoyed a ride in one when they worked the Summer Saturday Brighton to Exeter service.

And my money is safely in my wallet for the time being thankyou for asking :))

I certainly don't QJ, all I'm saying is that under Gas Hill things seemed to get done without question, he was like a dog with a bone. IIRC the BLS didn't have a cancelled tour for years in the second half of the last century. Obviously there are others factors too, but I think losing Gas was a slight hindrance to planning.

Maybe Gas could start running his own tours instead then?

It seems that the tour market is a tough place to be these days, however even the casual observer (never done one in my life) cannot fail to spot the enormously haphazard way in which events seem to occur.

I'm amazed at how often there are cancellations, and the way in which it seems to happen really rather late in the game. I realise of course that the concept of working together is seen as a bit of an ugly disease in many heritage circles, but the companies operating in this field surely need to pull their finger out and perhaps seriously consider using their collective might to push for some better contracts with their crew/traction suppliers and NR?! It is a shambles that one or more of these agencies can seemingly simply decide whenever the mood takes them that actually they haven't got a crew/loco/train path etc after all, or just can't be arsed to organise one. Okay the punters get their cash back, but this is clearly harmful to the tour operators' businesses, there needs to be a penalty clause in these supply contracts so the third parties might be inclined to try a bit harder. On a similar note, it's also slightly worrying to hear of how frequently the chosen heritage traction fails, which can cause major issues for timetabled TOC services. None of this can be doing the railtour sector or the heritage movement in general any favours.

Monies have now been returned.
According to the accompanying letter - it was all the fault of their (BLS) bank !
New chequebooks have now been procured.
After this fiasco only now are the BLS looking into using less antediluvian payment methods. Alas, with the return of the most antediluvian of railtour administrators - Norman 'Gas' Hill - our hopes will not be raised !

I think your fears are somewhat unfounded. The BLS tour to EMT depots in March is already full and there is a waiting list. Perhaps one reason the BLS was able to 'Pay on the Day' was due to the fact the train wasn't limited to seven coaches which seemed to be Gas Hill's policy.
