Interestingly it does look to be the expensive proposal involving a wholly new footbridge that seems to have been approved. All they needed to do was make the existing P7/8 emergency exit suitable for passenger use, which I guess would just involve adding a lift, a small gateline, a departure screen and a couple of TVMs, and sort out the pedestrian access to it. All very nice but not really necessary to deal with an entrance that will be used by a minority of users - it's an origin rather than a destination, and most housing is on the side where the present entrance is.

The emergency exit that gives out directly onto a blind bend access to a concrete plant? That would need significant layout changes.

Hopefully it will mean a P6 lift though, unless that platform is not going to be used for the EWR Bletchley terminators and will fall out of use in favour of reversing them in the high level platforms.

Bletchley Platforms 7 and 8 can't turn trains back towards MKC or Fenny Stratford, they'd have to shunt across at Bletchley west junction. Can't see that being preferred over retaining 6.

Thanks. That is certainly a gold plated solution with a big bow and silver bells on top!

All very nice for us of course, but far costlier than the basic solution that is needed for the side of the station which will always be much quieter than the present entrance side.

Ah thanks, I hadn’t appreciated from the original sketches that these were completely new buildings south of the access road. Quite amazing that they think this is needed now, but wasn’t when the original design was being drawn up…

I suspect some of the 'they' did think it was going to be needed right from the off, but others of the 'they' were reluctant to attach more cost to the project business case.
I suspect most of the 'they' thought it wasn't needed right now, but was going to be needed soon enough, and recognised that the idealism of doing the job 'properly' was balanced against the pragmatism of getting MK-Oxford services in and running (in theory, grrr).

I'm not convinced they are needed to be honest though they will be nice!

I did see an earlier design which involved buying out the concrete plant and moving the car park (new multi storey) and main entrance to that side though, funded in part by building flats on the present car park site. That looked quite good.
