Blackpool Tramway updates

Come what may, the service from Fleetwood should still carry on with its historical service to the southern reaches of the resort. I know people who regularly travel from the Cleveleys area to Manchester Square.

Ah well.... you say that but of course trams from Fleetwood Ferry terminated at the then Talbot Road Station until 1922 when the present curve at Gynn Square opened. There would be a certain logic to running trams from Fleetwood to Blackpool North and between Cleveleys and Starr Gate - but I have no idea how many passengers would be incovenienced by having to change trams.

Oh dear. Surely the passing of the 91 years from 1922 to 2013 would have shown that the Fleetwood tram service has been enhanced to serve other southern sea front areas of Blackpool that have gained from this system extension. The Pleasure Beach being a noted example of this.

Your reference to the passenger inconvenience that a change requires is rather a self-answering point, knowing what human nature is like...:roll:

Blackpool council have just remodelled talbot road from the prom upto the new roundabout outside wilkinsons/the old bus station and now they are gonna rip it all up again to put tracks down, is it me or do Blackpool council like wasting money?!

To be fair, considering how infrastructure is built in this country, it could have been another 20 years before it was built. It's lucky that the government has decided to devolve to local level some transport spending and allow other moneys to be put towards schemes that promote growth.

Then again if you go back far enough the historic service was from Fleetwood to North Station with passenger (but not vehicle) interchange with the Promenade service at the Gynn.

Well, it was only a minor historical quibble!

My point about the inconvenience of having to change trams was more about the numbers of passengers involved. Since I only use the trams to/from Fleetwood as a tourist (and an infrequent one at that) I have no way of knowing whether many passengers travel from north of Cleveleys to south of Talbot Square - especially since this is where I always get off the tram to walk back to Blackpool North! I would guess that destinations much farther south than that are mostly used by tourists and trippers rather than residents, but I have absolutely nothing to back that up. Perhaps someone with more local knowledge would care to illuminate me!

From what I've just read the tramway looks to have escaped any damage.

Tram services were curtailed on the tramway south of North Pier, and later in the day they were restricted to the section between Bispham and Ash Street in Fleetwood. Neither buses or trams were able to use the Central Promenade for majority of the day.

It also says that sea water managed to make its way through to Rigby Road depot, though again no major damage is reported.

Sadly it looks as if the extension to North station is in trouble. Cllr Blackburn is a well known opponent - he described it as 'boring' when first announced.

It does seems unfortunate that the council financial contributions to both the new tram link and to the museum project have come in the same time period.

Following feedback from the recent member survey, the forum staff have decided that Light Rail Systems justify multiple threads, rather than the current situation with most discussion in a single thread which many of you told us you find impenetrable.

Going forward we expect to see a range of threads, for example detailing subjects such as day to day running, operating policy, construction progress on new fleets and lines and future proposals for the system.
