Blackpool North to Wigan Wallgate Direct

I was a few minutes into Preston station on Sunday when I saw a direct service on the departure board to Wigan Wallgate.

I've found the service here on Real-time Trains ------ http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/Y96910/2016/01/24/advanced


I have a few questions about this direct service to Wallgate, a connection I don't remember seeing before. Does this service exist as a temporary measure or a trial basis? I have a sneaking suspicion that it's just for unit moving purposes but I'd be interested in hearing why it runs.....

Engineering work between Bolton and Manchester Vic/Picc. Happening next week as well.
RTT shows it is a "VAR" to the normal schedule

[The 39 Steps]

No trains towards Salford Crescent because of work in the Farnworth area. It combines a Blackpool North to Bolton service with a Bolton to Wigan Wallgate service. The trains turned back in Bolton P4 although it was shown beforehand as reversing in P3. It is planned to happen this weekend too.
