Blackpool North Preston.

So from 19th July for 6 weeks,trains from Blackpool North to Preston will run at a reduced frequency.Good timing,just in time for the 6 week school holidays,the busiest time of the year.Well done,an over crowded service becomes even more overcrowded.Congratulations.How many families will be put off travelling?

It sounds bad when a single statement is bandied about with no explanations; but when you look into it there may be very good reasons for it.

I'm shortly to have approx 6 weeks of a nightmare commute & then the same next year; however it is being phased in during the Summer hols to minimize disruption - I suffer due to not having any time off, but the needs of the many ...

I assume this is related to the Chorley Blockade where Northern will be terminating at Chorley from Manchester and not providng a service between Blackpool and Preston.

I have wondered about the timing of this myself. Whilst acknowledging that the work has to be done sometime (and inevitably people will be inconvenienced no matter when it's done), and that the work is part of a wider scheme that will lead to big improvements in the longer term, but the timing of it would appear to be, erm, unfortunate!

I'm working on the theory that there are good reasons why the work is taking place during the busiest time of the year for Blackpool trains. Anybody know why?

Well that one's easily answered - they haven't got any spare units! The odd few units freed-up by them not going all the way to Blackpool are being used to strengthen the only remaining hourly service between Manchester and Chorley.

Presumably, like the Nottingham blockade last year, the busiest few weeks for Blackpool traffic also happen to be the quietest few weeks for the commuter flows into Manchester (i.e. where the capacity is really restricted). Will the remaining trains to Blackpool be strengthened to provide the equivalent capacity anyway?

Since they appear not to have any units to operate the Blackburn-Burnley-Copy Pit Line-Manchester service until at least December, perhaps that may answer your query.
