The down line rails were replaced last night from the Bolton direction to the Ladybridge, welding and clipping down is happening today.
Part of the up line platform at Lostock, which was resurfaced a few weeks ago, has been dismantled and rebuilt again today.
The first section of AT cable from the substation to the feeder point North of the station was pulled in through the ducting and UTXs today, it runs from the northern feeder point to the UTX in the vee of the junction, just South of the up line platform. Still a lot of cable to pull in before energisation.

Photos sent to Dave to be posted tomorrow evening.

Bolton- apart from platform 1 having a severe deveg and continued work on ATF troughing on platform 5 nothing has changed.Platforms 1 & 5 remain unwired, all temporary fixtures and fittings remain in place on the wires that are up within the station area.In short, no progress.

I have added inianin's shot of progress at Chorley to his album here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/127646831@N03/albums/72157669390542677

and added Wrinkley's fine photoreport of substantial work in the Lostock area to his album here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/127646831@N03/albums/72157654034635234

I have added both sets to the Combined Volume here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/127646831@N03/albums/72157661069863633

Wrinkley's accompanying email concluded:

"I went down to the station at four this afternoon, no-one on site but six black flexible tubes are sticking out of the ducts where the UTX in the vee is. They must have worked through the night, I am guessing that each tube contains a cable. I can't see into the ducts as all the covers are back on. The four full cable drums that were there at five yesterday have disappeared so the cable must have been used.

The odd thing is that the tubes don't go into the UTX but run about 10 metres past it. There is no sign of the cables crossing the track to get to the substation, so unless they work nights this week, Lostock will not be online if energisation takes place."

This, together with Reg's report from Bolton must cast Juice by next weekend into grave doubt.

Isn't next weekend the 'Treat as Live' date, rather than the first energisation date? The former is normally a few weeks before the latter.

They have four days to energisation.

I think they will energise only Euxton Junction-Lostock on 28th.

I think they will energise only Euxton Junction-Lostock on 28th.

The energisation next weekend is now only going to be south from Salford Crescent and north from Buckshaw Parkway. Everything else will be turned on four weeks subsequently.

That is why you will probably have noticed most activity this weekend around Salford Central and Windsor Bridge South junction.

Lots of activity this morning between Salford Central and Crescent. They are building a pathway with what looks like steps down to some of the OHLE

Wiring of the middle track at Salford Crescent looks now to be complete with two wires all the way now - up to last week there was only one.

Didn't manage to get any good photos because of the low sun, sorry.

That must mean P1 is complete - after the fairly worrying news regarding Bolton's lack of wires in P1 & P5, this is a welcome bulletin!

GSoP Post 21.2 - edited to reflect live envelopes and extent of wires
Manchester Victoria - Preston; State of Play, week beginning 24th September 2018.

All masts in! Approx. 95/98 wire runs complete. Due to be treated as LIVE (south of Salford Crescent and north of Buckshaw Parkway ONLY) on 28th September.
Based on wiring completion by the end of September, the week beginning 8/10/18 will see test runs; 10/10/18 specifically pencilled in for Pendolini.
All mileages from Manchester Victoria. Bridge mileages are approximated where noted.

1. Man Vic Station (West End) - Man Vic West Jct - Deal Street Jct; 0m 0ch to 0m 32ch
Fully wired 2013-15. Platforms 1 & 2 at Man Vic have now been bedanglied.

2. Deal Street Jct - Salford Central (East End); 0m 32ch to 0m 59ch
Fully masted. Limit of electrification is currently at 0m 46ch; SPS is up along the unwired stretch.

3. Salford Central; 0m 59ch
Fully masted, most SPS (Small Part Steelwork e.g. dangly bits) up. The missing mast at the western end is now up, and is now in use as an SSA (self-supporting anchor), though insulators are yet to be spliced in. Earth wire now up on the Up side through the station. Lift to the westbound platform now open again.
The wires also overlap into the CEMEX sidings. On the Down side (westbound) platform, protruding roof beams are being cut back, and earth wire (or Return Screening Conductor wire) ducting is being installed at shin height.

4. Salford Central (West End) - Windsor Bridge South Jct; 0m 59ch to 1m 46ch
Two runs of Earth wire are up. Catenary & contact wires are now also up from west of Salford Central to Agecroft; details below.

5. Windsor Bridge South Jct - Windsor Bridge North Jct (inc. Salford Crescent); 1m 46ch to 1m 70ch
Windsor Bridge South Jct now wired (catenary/contact) from the Deal St direction on both the Salford Lines. Earth wires (+ AT wires) are also in situ here.
All lines through Salford Crescent are wired.
Repairs to the wooden fence on the eastern side have/are taken/taking place.
Further wiring details:
Wires up from Agecroft South Jn, to Windsor Bridge South Jn via
  • the Up Bolton (avoiding line at Crescent), where the wires continue onto the Up Salford, ending just south of Salford Central;
  • the Up & Down Bolton (P1 at Crescent) - Catenary & Contact wires now up here, and over at least 1 line on the overrun towards Atherton;
  • the Down Bolton (P2 at Crescent), where the wires continue onto the Down Salford, ending just south of Salford Central.
The crossovers at Agecroft South Jct, Windsor Bridge South Jct, and Windsor Bridge North Jct are also fully wired.
The "Windsor Link" (i.e. Windsor Bridge South Jct to Ordsall Lane Jct) is now fully wired on both lines; this means that Ordsall Lane Jct to Euxton Jct (via Bolton P3/P4) is continuously wired.

6. Windsor Bridge North Jct - Bolton (South End); 1m 70ch to 10m 50ch
Both lines are FULLY wired from Windsor Bridge North Jct to Lever St Jct; wires continue through Bolton P3 & P4 towards Lostock & the WCML at Euxton Jct.
Catenary & contact wires are up from west of Salford Central to Agecroft (Sth Jct, by the bin terminal) over both lines.
At Clifton, Drainage manhole modules are awaiting installation; temporary covers are over their future homes.
Brackets are fitted to the underside of the M60 overbridge. Bridge MVE1 27B (immediately NW of the M60 overbridge) is fully erected, but unopened, and work the walkway is not yet finished.
Both lines are fully wired from well south of Kearsley, through Kearsley Station and through Farnworth Tunnel to stop at Lever St Footbridge (just south of Bolton station). The break in the Down Line wiring nr Dixon Fold has been wired up.
SPS and Tensorex drums appearing on some masts/cantilevers around Burnden Jct (10m 09ch).
The Platform 5 Line is fully wired (C&C) from the points at Weston St to Orlando St Bridge.
The Platform 4 Line (Down Bolton) is now wired from Weston Street through Bolton to the existing wired section at Lostock; ditto the Platform 3 Line (Up Bolton).
South of Lever Street footbridge, the Up Line now has ATF wires installed.

7. Bolton Station; 10m 50ch
All masts in the station area are now in place. Earth wires now in.
Platform 1: Bolts & brackets now drilled into the glazed brick retaining wall opposite the platform; one might still be missing.
Platform 2: Line is fully wired (C&C) from the points at Weston St to the SSA (Self-Supporting Anchor - aka "the wicketkeeper"). Insulators have yet to be installed on the wicketkeeper, and most fixings are still temporary. Buffers look finished.
Platform 3 (Up Bolton): Wired from Orlando St Bridge, through the station, and onwards to Lostock & the WCML. The majority of fixings used are permanent (some are still temporary). Blackburn Line overrun now installed.
Platform 4 (Down Bolton): Wired from Weston Street through P4 and onwards to Lostock & the WCML.
Platform 5: Wires still absent, but the shin-high ducting is now installed.
Platforms 100% open to public; the fenced-off section of canopy support to the right of signal "MP9239" has now been unfenced. Canopies look complete.

8. Bolton (North End) - Lostock (South End); 10m 50ch to 13m 52ch
Both the Up (P3) & Down (P4) Bolton Lines have been wired from Bolton station, past Lostock ATF Sectioning Station, over Lostock Jct and through Lostock Station to the existing wires at Golf Course Footbridge, thence continuing to the WCML.
The run of masts between Newport St & the NW end of P5 now have their earth wire affixed.
The crossover NW of Newport Street has not been wired yet.
Between the 2nd & 3rd bridges NW of Newport St (the unknown bridge & Dawes St), the mast in photo A732m has led a chequered life, being assembled, dismantled and then re-assembled!It has now been reinstated parallel to the two bridges it was installed between, and already bears the wires on the Down Bolton (temporary fixings, AFAIK).
Cable ducting troughs laid in the Down Side Cess between Bolton Station, past Newport Street, under Soho Street, Black Horse St & New St, and through Bullfield Tunnel.
The overrun along the line to Blackburn (as far as Bradshawgate Tunnel) has now been wired from P3; they have yet to reach there from P1.
Earth wire up on the Down side west of Moor St Tunnel.

Between Moor Lane & Lostock, Earth wires have already been strung.
Autotransformer wires now largely up between Moor Lane & Mayor St. Bridges, and between Lostock & Ladybridge (on both lines); they have now gone under Dean Clough Bridge & the Ladybridge on both sides.
A UTX has been installed in the "vee" in Lostock Jct; this now takes the ATF wires for both routes at Lostock Jct.
Most (if not all) wires are now up over Lostock Jct itself.
All masts now up on the Wigan overlap; earth wires now up too, in varying lengths on both sides. C&C wires also up on the overlap on both lines until the Limit of Wiring. Some dangly arms and all the termination insulators have not yet been installed.

9. Lostock Station; 13m 52ch
Switchgear box delivered 6th April '18. Over the August Bank Holiday Weekend, the two Autotransformers (AT1 & AT2) were delivered.
Both Preston Lines wired through the station to connect with the existing wires north of "Golf Course" footbridge.
Platform extension/resurfacing work complete on the Down platform (fully) and the Up platform (NW of the station bridge); work on the Up platform still ongoing east of the bridge.
ATF wires are in through the UTXs around the station; works are now presumed finished as the 4 drums of wire are now AWOL. (NB: ATF wires are confirmed only for the Preston lines; not sure if they were ever planned to go to Wigan. The UTX there may be future-proofing.)

10. Lostock (North End) - Euxton Jct; 13m 52ch to 25m 31ch
Two more UTXs have been installed in the "vee" between the Preston & Wigan lines, to the north of Lostock station; one takes the ATF wires for the Wigan Line, the other does the same for the Preston Line.
Immediately north of Lostock, the closest TTCs to the platforms have now sprouted part of their switchgear kit.
All C&C wires up on both lines from south of Bolton, through Lostock, Horwich, Blackrod & Adlington, over Yarrow Viaduct, through Chorley Station, Chorley Tunnel, the Flying Arches & Buckshaw Parkway to the WCML.
Temp. fixings still evident at Buckshaw Pkwy & Adlington stns. AT & earth wires not always present, but the C&C appears continuous.
On Yarrow Viaduct, the northern portal has now been installed. The Down side Earth wire is also up, but the Down side AT wire is still absent. (It is assumed this is replicated on the Up side.)
AT wires still need installation/remedial work at Station Rd Bridge (Blackrod; B5238; 17m 9ch).
At Railway Rd Bridge (Adlington; 19m 0148yds), AT wires (and some earth wires) still need to be installed.
Within Adlington Station, temporary fixings (i.e. pulleys) are still extant. Orangemen were digging ducting trenches for the Earthing bonds for the TTCs on the Up platform.
Orangemen at work on the footpath at the foot of the northern steps of Heath Charnock FB.
Through Chorley Station, all wires (including ATF wires) are installed.
The Buckshaw Parkway crossover is also wired.
Within Buckshaw Pkwy, the registration arms on the footbridge are not yet in position.

Do let me know if I've missed anything!

There are no AT wires on the masts on the Wigan line at Lostock, are they needed at the moment as it's only an overrun section.

Four weeks is a big delay if 95/98 wire runs are completed! What is the hold-up?

Just because the wire is up it dosn't mean the switch can be thrown. Insulation needs putting in in places, clearances checked and adjusted, etc. Depending on how accurately the sps was installed can depend how long it will take

The c and c wires are up all the way from ordsall jcn through salford crescent on through Bolton main platforms (3&4) to Euxton Jcn and connected to existing wires at both ends just needs adjusting for height and stagger (wire ZigZag) in places as of this morning

But don't they have to energise at low voltage before snagging can take place?

Presumably you can test resistance to earth before you throw the switch...

I went by train from Southport via Bolton to the Salfords, and back, today. While en route I spoke to Wrinkley who was also visiting the Salfords, so we met up and had fun.

The disappointing news is 1. nowt visible has happened at Bolton since Reg's report yesterday and 2. Salford Central looks unchanged overhead since last week, though the ducting along the back of the Victoria-bound platform looks cable-ready. There is still just a lone earth wire overhead.

As others have said, the good news is that it looks like all overhead wires are in place through Salford Crescent. There are quite a lot of temporary fixings, but copper is aloft.

Wrinkley also sent studies of the extensive cabling troughs at Lostock.

I've attached those shots and one from today to his album here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/127646831@N03/albums/72157654034635234

and all our output to the Combined Volume here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/127646831@N03/albums/72157661069863633

Thank you Wrinkley.

B330R - I am still amazed Dave - we saw this I think in February from humble beginnings and then we said it must be a bespoke fitting. It really has turned out to be quite substantial and a neat bit of design. Love the shot.

Very disappointing indeed. Yet another deadline missed? How many is that on phase 4?

Very disappointed today to still see lots of gaps in the 25kv trunking between Stalybridge and Victoria. No evidence that the 'extension lead' has left Stalybridge yet to start its route to Ordsall Lane.

That's not between Manchester and Euxton, and the route discussed in this thread can be energised, section proved and tested without the Great Extension Lead. The GEL is only required when a timetable with electric trains actually appears, which is looking like May 2019?
