I came down Miles Platting bank today and noted masts installed at a point were the Metrolink dives down under the bank. I thought electrification to SYB had been paused so what is the situation?

As part of the current work they are wiring a short way east of Victoria, including the crossovers at Victoria East Jn, to where you saw the masts.
This is to provide somewhere for EMUs to reverse back into the other platforms at Victoria.
Otherwise, Victoria could only reverse an EMU in its arrival platform, as now, or shunt out west to park in the Exchange siding.

But don't bother reading it for this project because it hasn't been updated from September.
No specific dates for completion of either Manchester-Preston or Preston-Blackpool electrification.
It doesn't even say the Ordsall Chord is completed.
And still the fatuous box of text where NR promises to work with the new franchise holders to deliver improvements:
The new Northern and TransPennine Express franchises include ambitious commitments to transform rail services in the north of England between now and the end of 2019, with extra services, new trains and a massive increase in capacity to accommodate more passengers while reducing crowding. Network Rail will work with the successful franchise bidders to deliver the outputs of the North of England Programmes and to seek opportunities for further passenger benefits to be delivered as infrastructure schemes are completed during CP6.

"Danger live wires below" signs have been fixed to bridges in the Maudland area of Preston, on the Blackpool line as it immediately branches away from the station approach.

Having had my first experience of the Blackpool line during its bustitution this evening, I have one main thought...

Can the buses become permanent? :lol: So much better than the trains Northern run on this route...

Will we get advanced knowledge of the first test train - I assume there will be many such trains? Personally I'd like to view the very first electric train goig through Lostock, even if it's only a test. Possibly on the grounds that knowing how much the whole thing has been delayed, the first could be the last....:'(

There's a piece in the January Modern Railways, p. 17, saying Manchester-Preston delayed by foundation problems for masts including old mine workings and running sand. "Network Rail says it has now found innovative solutions. ... One such solution involves a steel cylinder being inserted into the ground to act as a support, preventing ground collapse. A big drill then removes the soil from within the steel casing and the cylinder is filled with concrete. Additional weekend blockades will be needed to keep the project to time."

I thought that was a standard method of piling anyway.

I don't think the steel sleeve is very common at all.

What is different is that normally a steel tube is piled into the ground and then the mast is bolted onto it. This method, after the steel is piled in, then the soil/clay/ ground is removed and then filled with concrete. That way gravity gives a boost too and the concrete will sill out of the bottom of the tube and help stabilization too .
