I think a lot more than that. In round figures the shuttering is probably approaching 2 x 4 m. With normal concrete density being around 2.3 tonnes per cubic metre, I think you could be in much high single figures, perhaps 6 or 7 depending on depth - say 50 cm?

Agreed- I design concrete and grouts by the way for Dayton Superior Corp in the USA. My rough math says 5 metric tonnes minimum even allowing for the rebar.

It really is embarrassing IMHO. There are a few at Euxton where they put the neutral section in then some around Salford. I really hope they start shortly and doing a few runs - well - to at least - make a start.

Word is that Kirkham North Junction box will be demolished tomorrow from first daylight. It is done by an on track machine with a reaching grab, which picks the remains up and puts it on a trolley or wagon. The weather forecast is wet and windy so I don't know if that will affect it. It has been postponed before.
Salwick is due to be demolished on Monday.

That's a nice clean layout at Kirkham North.
Made a mess of the signal box though.
I hope they were able to recycle the not-so-old double glazing panels.

I assume you mean the precast concrete foundations? Don't forget, all that earth put back in on top of that precast also contributes to the load carrying capability.

Funny I was thinking that too.
I suppose cost of transport and other costs involved.
It would have been nice to an 'Exeter West' job and move it elsewhere as a fully working (albeit signal simulated) box.
Again, pounds, shillings and pence, and lots of it.
the only thing they tend to preserve is the signal box diagram.

I was just typing exactly what Trackman has posted. The cost of transport and then finding somewhere to store a frame as big as this would have been difficult for all but the largest preserved railways. Those same railways have been established so long now they don't really need a 100 year old L&Y frame now. I am sure the useful parts from below the frame and from the blockshelf have been took away to be used elsewhere. It was pretty sad to see the box come down but time marches on. I am sure if the L&Y had survived to this day it would have tore this box down and replaced it years anyway.
