Comments on photo 7748m got my brain into gear.

I use the wonderful "Britain from Above" website for Wikipedia articles (it's totally free, you only need to login (also free) if you want to zoom), but I never thought to look at "our" line.

Residents living near the railway between Preston and Blackpool North are invited to a series of drop-in events over the next month to find out more about the next phase of upgrade work.

As part of Network Rail’s £1bn+ Great North Rail Project, work continues to complete the upgrade and electrification of the railway between Preston and Blackpool. For safety reasons some work has to be carried out at night when trains aren’t running which includes piling work to install foundations and the steel masts which will carry electric wires to power greener and quieter electric trains.

Noel Connolly, head of programme management for Network Rail, said: “This work forms part of our Railway Upgrade Plan and will deliver better, greener and more efficient services for passengers in the north.

“I appreciate that the work could be disruptive, so I’d like to thank local residents for their patience while we carry this out. We will take all possible measures to keep disruption to an absolute minimum.”

These drop in sessions form part of a regular series of events along the route where local residents are invited to speak to Network Rail staff who will be on hand to answer questions and provide more detail on the work being carried out:

Wednesday 26 July 16:00-19:00 at Kirkham Community Centre, Mill Street, Kirkham, PR4 2AN
Monday 31 July 16:00-19:00 at Poulton Civic Centre, Breck Road, Poulton-le-Fylde, FY6 7PU

On a trip between the Blackpool and Preston yesterday, I noticed that a decent number poles between Staining and Kirkham have received their cantilever bits and bobs. Was sat wrong side both ways but probably about 20-30 in total, and I suspect that will have increased last night...

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet but the plans for Kirkham and Wesham station are up on Fylde Borough's planning portal.

Edit: It looks like Kirkham Tip LC will be getting a bridge.

Unless they build the extensions, the platforms are staying at 183m.
That's roughly 8x23m. Not long enough for Pendolinos.

As work continues to provide a better railway between Manchester and Preston, Bolton passengers are being reminded of changes to train services this August.

For 16 days between Saturday 12 August and Sunday 27 August 2017, Network Rail’s orange army will continue work to upgrade the railway through Bolton in preparation for electric trains running on the line.

As a result, the majority of train services will not run in or out of Bolton until the first service on Monday 28 August 2017. However, trains will still run from Bolton to Blackburn and Clitheroe during weekdays and bus replacements will also be in use. Passengers are being urged to plan their journey ahead and check before they travel on www.nationalrail.co.uk.

The upgrade forms part of the £1bn+ Great North Rail Project which will see faster, electric trains between Manchester and Preston.

Mark Killick, chief operating officer for Network Rail, said: “These essential improvements will ensure the station is fit for use for many years to come as the demand on train services increase. The work will allow more trains to run between Manchester and Preston, enabling faster and more frequent journeys for passengers in Bolton.

“I understand the work will cause disruption for some people and I apologise but in the long term, the enhancement of the station will improve the passenger experience.”

Liam Sumpter, regional director for Northern, comments: “Great improvements are coming for our customers in the north west, and particularly those travelling through Bolton, with quicker journeys, longer trains and more frequent services. Before we can deliver that, essential large scale engineering work has to take place and we thank our customers for their patience while this happens.”

Work taking place includes: restoring an unused platform, modifying existing platforms and canopies as well as remodelling track, upgrading signalling and installing overhead line equipment.

On my screen your post pushed us onto page 320! Normal PC with whatever the default settings are for viewing the forum, as I wouldn't know how to change them. I assume there is a setting somewhere for number of posts per page and yours is set to twice what mine is.

See User Control Panel > Settings & Options > Edit Options > Thread Display Options > Number of Posts to Show Per Page. The "forum default" appears to be 15 posts per page, at least on my PC and phone.

So on a slightly more serious note, I took a trip Manchester to Bolton last night and progress is definitely there. Hopefully many more masts will go up in the Bolton blockade next month.

(I wonder why they don't do a blockade of the line throughout August so that they can get more stuff done during the school summer holidays? Divert as many services as possible through Golborne and Wigan, and send some others though Burnley)

Indeed and good news. It has worried me for a while that the slowest progress "appears" to be on this section. I naively thought once the serious civil engineering - aka Farnworth Tunnel was done it would progress faster than it has. I just hope the blockade does indeed produce an avalanche of progress. I will be in the USA until Thanksgiving (4th Thursday in November for those of you not in the know), so hopefully by then it will be just what lengths of wire/catenary needs doing. I am home next weekend for a lightning quick trip home and I will be traveling from the airport to Preston so I will have a butchers.

A great site indeed.. Shame to see wonderful Victorian structures like the 13 arches unused and overgrown. It would be nice to see it being used for something if not transport..
Poulton looks pretty much the same! I'll be there at w/e visiting folks so will look for any changes and take pics.

The connecting line at the west end of Bolton station is abandoned from this weekend. Are they slewing track across where it sits or is it just removing redundant equipment?

It won't be size of the screen that's the difference, it'll be you've changed the forum settings for your account to 50 posts per page instead of the default 25, so you'll scroll more than the rest of us. ;)
