May I ask two related Dumbo questions?

I believe Fillie nudges along, one ring at a time.

1. Suppose the upper operator is digging away three feet or so ahead of her and the earth at the top of her face's circle changes to very loose; what is to stop it cascading down and leaving a void above, perhaps under the fast lane of the major road on top?

2. Suppose it does and this is not spotted, so Fillie places the next ring and nudges ahead, leaving a void above which subsequently collapses?

I hope the questions make sense.

According to the article and picture in Rail Engineer, the earth face is supported by a hood while the cutting booms work underneath. The fore-poling plates under this hood are designed to be rammed into the earth to provide pre-support before the lining is installed. Presumably that is why they are wedge shaped.

In particular, it says:
The ground above is supported by a series of fore-poling plates at the crown, incorporated within a hood that extends 2.275m beyond the main shell.

Warm thanks to several of you who have answered my Dumbo question so fully and clearly.

Geeves has now rightly upbraided me twice for not passing on the contents of the interesting email he sent accompanying the photos of his trip round Fillie's site.

I didn't do so through incompetence; apologies to all, especially Geeves.

Here's what he wrote:

They are 45m in out of 270. Unknown to me before is that the first tunnel constructed was dug out, built and then reburied. This is why the boring machine is not the more usual style of cutting head because of the loose sand, blocks, clay bricks and other debris found while cutting.

Each ring is made up of 10 segments they each contain a waterproof rubber seal and weigh 2.5 tons each. The first two rings on the outside the tunnel will be removed and the concrete we can see on the other side will also go. They are too reclad in a more fitting style. The Vent on the top also must stay due to is being listed but will of course be sealed at the bottom now.

The boring machine its self will be scrapped and the parts that can be sold will be sold back to tunnel engineering.

Please remember that the stats he gives at the start of his message were then, not now.

Yes, "cut and cover" is the term for that type of construction. Something that does not seem to be generally known for that particular tunnel.

I wonder if the second smaller tunnel was constructed in the same way.

So we now have a third data point. We believe digging began on the evening of 31 July. The Minister visited on 11 Aug, 10-11 days later, and progress was then said to be 10m. Geeves visited on 26 August and total progress was 45m.

Between the two visits Fillie did 35m in 15 days, an average of 2.666m a day, replicating the number of the A666 above. The lower rate in the first 10 days may have been due to familiarisation and the difficulty of getting through the portal. If she continues at the higher rate, the 225m that remained at Geeves's visit will take about 96 days, which brings us to the end of November. Then there's a few weeks' other work before double track running can resume. 4 weeks was allowed for this in the schedule that was circulted to residents.

Is a blockade of the Bolton area planned over Christmas? Perhaps we should be expecting a resumption of two-track running at the end of that.

A complex tunnelling project to enable electric trains to run between Bolton and Manchester has been delayed, possibly until December, by exceptionally poor ground conditions.

Network Rail engineers enlarging the 1834-built Farnworth Tunnel have run into large swathes of sand. Rather than a firm material to bore through, sand pours down into the excavated area halting progress.

It has proved impossible to safely excavate while concurrently installing and grouting sections of tunnel wall as was originally planned.
Engineers are now pumping resin into the ground to firm it up before 9m-wide Fillie, the UK’s largest tunnelling machine, bores through it.

For local train passengers the railway between Bolton and Manchester will continue to operate as it has since May.

Martin Frobisher, route managing director for Network Rail, said: “This delay is intensely frustrating for our engineers and, more importantly, for passengers who are set to benefit from more frequent, faster, quieter services once this wider programme of work is complete.

“We are doing the best we can in difficult circumstances and we are sorry it is taking longer than we first thought and impacting on passengers.

“We first hit an area of running sand on August 14 when our engineers saw it suddenly pouring from the working face. This has slowed progress and created big voids, the largest of which needed filling with around 35 tonnes of grout. Again on August 27, sand poured into the excavated area and our engineers had to remove 100 tonnes of material by hand.

“The nature of civil engineering, especially deep below ground, is that you never fully know the exact ground conditions until you start tunnelling or excavating. Taking soil samples acts as a guide but is never 100% accurate because conditions vary greatly with the amount of water present.

"The rate of progress is very dependent upon the conditions and we are working around the clock to complete this as quickly as possible.

“Our top consideration is safety. Our engineers face a huge challenge. We must allow them the time they need to tackle it safely. We will of course provide further updates over the coming weeks when we know more."

Nick Donovan, managing director at First TransPennine Express, said: "Throughout the duration of the vital electrification programme at Farnworth Tunnel, we have worked very closely with Network Rail to ensure our customers remain informed and are kept moving.

"While the tunnelling being more challenging than anyone expected is disappointing, we will continue to focus our efforts on delivering train services until the work is completed.”

Alex Hynes, managing director for Northern Rail, said: “We are deeply disappointed that work to deliver the Farnworth Tunnel project will now not be completed by October 5, as originally planned. This will have a significant impact on the lives of our daily commuters.

“No matter what, we will continue to work with Network Rail and First TransPennine Express and do our utmost to keep our customers up-to-date with the latest developments as and when they happen.”

Northern Rail and First TransPennine Express services will continue as planned until October 5. The train plan after this date is currently being determined.

• The original Farnworth Tunnel was built in 1834. It was built to accommodate a single track for steam-powered trains.
• It is being enlarged by a 9m-wide drilling machine so it can in future house two tracks with overhead electric equipment to enable electric trains to run through it.
• Tunnelling started on August 1 and was originally planned to be completed by October 5.
• More than 1,500 soil samples have been taken, each one eight metres in depth, to try and get as accurate an idea as possible of the ground conditions to be encountered, but such testing can only ever act as a guide.
• Fillie, built in Oldham, was expected to be able to tunnel 5.6m to 7m every 24hrs. But because of the very poor ground conditions, she has only been able to bore at a rate of 2.8m / 24hrs.
• Farnworth tunnel is 276m long and, as at September 2, 45m had been excavated since tunnelling started on August 1, leaving a further 231m to go.
• On the assumption that the rate of tunnelling stays as it is now, completion will be December.

I suppose one question now is whether weekend services will resume in early October, as the only implementable part of the original plan to resume a full service from then.

At least they told us soon enough.
The eagle eyes on here had spotted the slow progress of course.

Looking on the bright (?) side, I assume the weekend possessions will continue essentially through until the new timetable in December, which ought to mean better progress on the other electrification work.
NRE is still showing October 5 as the end of the diversions.

Does it also mean the Liverpool-Preston electrics will be deferred?

Now this should give more time to do a much better job on Farnworth Tunnel.

It's no good trying to rush the job, then to end up with years of problems.

The pictures, at the bottom of the press release, of the material that has fallen in are amazing. Looks like it has fallen in up to the grassy ground surface above the tunnel.

Now this should give more time to do a much better job on Farnworth Tunnel.

It's no good trying to rush the job, then to end up with years of problems.

The additional time isn't going to make any difference to the quality of the finished tunnel.

This is an issue with digging a hole, the workers on the TBM are going as fast as they can given the ground conditions. The tunnel is lined with interlocking pre-cast concrete ring sections as soon as the tunnel boring machine/tunnelling shield moves forward, these are grouted in place, in essence, the tunnel has already been built, it's now being installed below ground, if that makes more sense from a quality/safety perspective.

The tunnel lining is already quality checked, the grout used is checked, it doesn't matter if the machine manages 1 to 2 rings per day, or the 4 to 5 rings per day that was originally planned, they're all fitted in exactly the same way to the exact same specification. The slow speed in moving forward just means the lining section and grouting equipment sits doing nothing for longer periods each day, the actual lining process will take the same time for each ring regardless of how many are fitted each day.

I suppose closures of the A666 may now be required, for works to improve the quality of the ground under it.

You can see where the extra time an expense is coming if you look at the network rail press release at picture titled "creating a pit". At first you dont realise what exactly it is you are looking at untill you see in the gloom the front of the TBM now back in daylight again... Oh dear!

That would explain the grassy soil in the tunnel.

Well press release does mention some emergency grouting and a change in approach to grout ahead of the TBM before they excavate.

Would have been a lot easier before they backfilled the tunnel with foam concrete but I suppose **** happens.

I suppose if the original tunnel was built by cut and cover, they wouldn't be too bothered what material covered it afterwards.
Maybe a virgin ridge would have been much easier to tunnel through.

Incidentally the length given for the tunnel in the press release, 276m (equivalent to 302 yards) is longer than the figure of 270m in previous reports.

The Quail/Trackmaps map says 295 yards, which is equivalent to 270m.

Exactly what I thought when I looked at the photo. Thought it was a photoo f the receiving pit at farnworth...

Then I recognised the leading edge of the machine staring back at me like abeached whale..

Well I hope so - here is why. Yes the delay is disappointing but if they plough on with other electrification work so that the project as a whole remains on time that will be positive spin -sorry, good news. There has to be a silver lining to this cloud. :D

The problem is there's still not a contractor (or contractors) formally appointed to carry out the electrification works.

Probably because the A666 goes over it, which it would be unacceptable to close.

I asked a network rail engineer the same question a few weeks ago and apparently it would have been cheaper but would have risked destabilised the smaller bore meaning the whole line would have needed to close.

Ah, thanks, I thought that might be the reason. Fingers crossed that the collapse does not destabilise the other tunnel!
