Paul and I went to see what we could see to day.

I've added Paul's shots to his album here:

It looks as if the Zigzag Bridge might be due to come down very soon, let's keep cameras with us when in or passing through the area.

Great pictures but shouldn't the sign in image No.5848A have the spark rising from the ground? :)

Thanks for more wonderful pictures. If you don't mind I'd like to put a link to your album in the Ordsall Chord thread and one on Skyscrapercity.

Whist not knowing for sure the purpose of particular bits of the work, I can at least partially confirm something you ask in one of the captions. Although the Ordsall Chord will diverge to the right from the existing viaduct at Castlefield, as seen by the driver of a train from Piccadilly to Liverpool, the existing viaduct is to be widened on the left in the vicinity of the point of divergence, thus straightening a kink in the track between Deansgate and Ordsall Lane.

I think you may be using the term Zigzag Bridge differently from the official documents. The bridge over the Irwell that once carried a road (Hampson Street) and more recently carried pedestrians and cyclists, and presents a zigzag pattern of white diagonal bracing when viewed along the river, is nevertheless not the Zigzag Bridge, but Princes Bridge. The term Zigzag Viaduct, as used in the documents, refers to the nearby brick viaduct, the edge of which is zigzag when seen in plan. Something of this zigzag can be seen on Google Streetview:

Thank you for your kind remark. I'd be delighted if you link to Ordsall and SSC, perhaps you could use the style I use for links to other flickr albums?

You're spot on re my Zigzag error, I've corrected it in the offending shots. I've also amended the text accompanying the viaduct widening work given your clarification.

Team work! Thank you.

There are now OLE booms up between Ordsall Lane Jn. and Liverpool Road bridge, plus the bases are in for the new signal gantries each side of Liverpool Road bridge.

I know, strictly speaking, this is package A (Ordsall Chord) related stuff, but let's take it as being on the Phase 4 line of route and rejoice!

I think I spied a new piled base on the Eccles route close to Ordsall Lane last week.
Possibly also related to Chord works and resignalling?
Is Ordsall Lane Junction itself being remodelled?

Yep, to make Eccles - Victoria the "main line" and the Windsor Link and Castlefield line both become "branches". The whole lot is speeded up (a little bit) in the process.

All lines through the junction become bi-directional (If I recall correctly, the Down Bolton from Castlefield junction might be the exception), hence all the new signal gantries.

Wrinkley has been out and about near Ladybridge and sent this report:

I had a walk along the line today, fencing is still going up on the north side and some trees being cut back.

Murphys appear to be pulling out slowly, the large pile of stone near the ladybridge has gone, as have all the odd pieces of drain pipe in that area. The large pile of stone between Beaumont Road and the station has gone and so has most of the pipe, but there is still a large quantity of concrete manhole sections. There is also less plant on site.

A large pile of spoil has appeared, starting at Beaumont Road and going back towards the station for about 120 metres. It wasn’t there the last time that I looked, about two weeks back and I can’t see where its come from.

No sign of any marker posts of any kind yet, but I did find two strangers in the river, photos attached.

He also sent eight photos, which I have added to his album here:

and to the Combined Volume here:

Thank you Wrinkley

They suggest a name for a pub, the Dog and Heron.

Nice one.

I did a train trip from Lime Street to Man Vic and back today. Strictly, the first shot should go on the Liv-Man thread, but hey.

Lots of changes alongside the route, notably housing developments at Huyton's former goods yard and the former fields north of the tracks near Huyton and Broad Green.

I've added the photos to the Combined Volume here:

Not sure if a picture of the new OLE portals towards Windsor Bridge South Jn has been posted (I know it has been referred to).

As can be seen from the picture, most of these are full portals with booms, plus a couple of cantilevers, also with booms.
Back towards Ordsall Lane there are 4 slim masts without booms, some interleaved with the existing live masts.
Towards Eccles, there is a new base with mast/boom ready on the bank alongside (Up side).
There must be wiring changes coming in for the remodelled junction.
At Cross Lane access point, it looks as though a site for an equipment cabinet has been established.
There's another at the point where the Liverpool Road line went off the Castlefield route.
It seems to have gone quiet on the rest of the route to Euxton.

Trains all to pot to/from Blackpool this morning, with signal problems at Fylde Jn.
Some trains delayed 40-90 minutes between Kirkham and Preston.

I don't quite understand this talk about moving a storage facility to Leyland sidings; aren't the sidings at Leyland covered by a housing estate now?

No, wrong sidings. The ones being used are at Leyland Motors. No current traffic but still connected and signalled.

Seems Northern are doing well on new depot/ servicing facilities in the Lancs area with the new facility at King a Street Blackburn as well and the temporary upgraded servicing facility at Preston PSB sidings installed last year.
