Poor Kate. My heart bleeds. I have been advising people who have the use of a car to drive over to Atherton or Hindley. I am sure Kate will have been complaining when the service was running, maybe they will appreciate more that they have a station with a train service to Manchester at all unlike us lot in Heywood that have nothing.

Anyways my coach from the Crescent back to Victoria was a very luxurious leather seated 62 plate coach. Not sure which bus she has been on.

Is the bridge repair a temporary fix until a permanent solution can be planned in?
There's nothing to suggest it's not permanent. The fact that the road will be closed for several more weeks suggests it is permanent.

The (previous) construction of the abutment seems from the pictures to be a double brick or block wall with some sort of infill between, rather (as I would have expected given that the bridge is said to date from the 1960s) a reinforced concrete wall with brick facing.

It's a sixties bridge on old abutments, just as many of the bridges recently raised for electrification (e.g. Lostock, Ladybridge and Dean Clough bridge).

Thanks. I almost added a guess to that effect to my post. However they obviously seem to think that, provided no more water mains break, there's no need to rebuild the abutments now.

Sorry if I've missed it being reported.

There are currently new sleepers in position on the downside of the Down/Up Lytham line, from about 50 metres after Kirkham North Jn progressing around the corner. This was viewed from a Blackpool a North train so it was difficult to see the extent of how far it goes.

Also, foundation trench has been dug where the old Down Fast was at lirkham towards Kirkham South Jn, this for what will be the new Up Main line from Blackpool's north serving the new Platform.

Oh dear they are putting it in upside down the water is meant to flow off the canopy not collect in the middle which is why the newer canopies at Bolton leak so much

Almost as convenient as having a Minister of Transport who was also a contractor.

A flagrant conflict of interest as a motorway building contractor who became Sec of State for Transport with a remit to implement the Beeching closures.

A conflict which he addressed by divesting his directorship - to his wife.

A politician of the highest order of competency in lining his own pockets, nothing gas changed in British politics since

That signal is a bit over kill. No more can you go from Platform 3 to Chorley, so the only signalled route from Platform 3 in the Down direction is towards Darwen. The number 4 junction indicator isn't needed, but it seems most signalling schemes now include junction indicators even when there's only one signalled route.

It's insurance, to make sure the driver understands that they are taking the turnout route. That way, all turnout moves look the same and all look different from a move forward on the main line. You could also (in theory) have a had a shunt route forward from MP9239 to behind MP638 on the Up (to an LOS and then shunt to 4) but I'm suspecting that even Ops couldn't justify it.

The current Railway Magazine, September 2017, page 101 has a piece on the Preston-Blackpool North electrification and resignalling.

Nothing new concerning plans, but a couple of good photos of to-be-closed signalboxes, together with details of their origins.

There's an almost identical sign at Wigan North Western advising drivers Ascot Hindley.

It's been asked in the other thread, it's worth asking here too. What are they doing to the playforms at Moses Gate? (see pics linked in #5122). Weren't they finished two years ago?

Yes, but to a track alignment that was compromised by an unfortunate incident involving a retaining wall just south of the overline bridge - I would guess that the removal of said retaining wall, following the second flood, may have opened up the opportunity to address this compromise.

Went through Moses Gate this morning, train crawled passed, heard people on the train commenting about how big the concrete tubes are. Also comment on how many members of the Orange Army were on Moses Gate platform.

I took this photo in July from the bridge at Poulton showing the severed connection. I think any dream of connecting Fleetwood to the network is dead and buried.

P5 was in use at Bolton this morning, looking at RTT it was just a substitute for P4, maybe work overrunning.
Edit: Just checked again, national rail is showing everything going from P5 and P4 not in use
