Would people on here recommend a Blackberry phone or an apple iphone? I'm planning on getting one if I can make up my mind. :)

Batten down the hatches a war is about to break out !!!
For the record I have a iPhone 4S and am very happy with it.
But I am sure many people will come along and tell me I have the worst phone imaginable !!

Depends what you want to use it for. Much as it pains me I'd say an iPhone is better for leisure largely due to the app store. I would recommend an Android but that is not an option :p

When it comes to phones, it's all very subjective I find. Personally, as long as it's fairly decent and can access the internet a couple of times a week for a few minutes, I am not too bothered.

There will be people who are quick to tell you that BlackBerries are crap, iPhones are great blah blah, but I tend to ignore those statements.

Well, for Pay-As-You-Go, iPhones are ridiculously priced full stop. I am quite happy with my BB Curve (almost 2 years old now); quite inexpensive, easy internet access through Opera Mini, and the free messenger service is very useful for saving credit.

If you want to use Apps, then get the iPhone.

Apple all the way for me. I can play Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2012 whilst I'm having a lengthy spell on the can etc.

If you probably only want to make calls and texts then the iPhone is probably a bit wasted on you. If you will use the net loads, and apps loads, then get yourself the iPhone

I went though a minimum of 6 Blackberry Curves with Orange as they kept breaking down - in the end I gave up and went with a HTC phone with the Android system which has yet to break down and has a number of useful downloads available for it.

One reason why I like iPhones is simply because I organise my music into playlists then album names in iTunes, it's a lot easier for me to listen to my music on the iPhone rather then having to carry a iPod and a iPhone around with me.

Obviously the title of this thread should be renamed to:

Blackberry OS - Android - iOS - Symbian OS - Windows Mobile

As these are the main 5 operating systems available for mobile devices.

If the choice is between an iPhone and Blackberry, then get an iPhone. A friend of mine has had enough with Blackberry due to repeated technical faults and other limitations through lack of innovation, and got an Android.

I got a HTC with a windows operating system, it's very good, but there isn't much support for it out there yet as in the apps etc...

Yeah, but with a contract phone you're locked into paying what ever a month for years, so you probably end up paying the same anyway. Where as with a PAYG phone you can change providers as often as you wish. If you purchase an iPhone full price from Apple it comes unlocked as well.

I don't make many phone calls, I just use the net and apps, so a PAYG phone suits my needs.

Go to your local mobile shop and have a look and have a play with the handsets for what you like.

If between a Blackberry & Iphone i would say the Iphone as the better phone between the two.

But i would suggest looking at Android though especially the HTC Senesation and the Samsung Nexus S & Galaxy II s. As both are extremely comparable if not better then the Iphone.

But as all tech comes down to personal opioin most of all.

Its not a bad handset at all, extremely comparable to the more recent Android devices. Thats coming from not a massive Apple fan :p

Hopefully you weren't one of these people queuing up to get one :P

I have a Blackberry for work purposes. Regularly use it for emails and internet, had it since July last year, unfortunately the battery only lasts a day.

I agree, think long and hard about what you want to use it for, then go in to a shop and ask to see the 2 / compare features etc.

I have both, the BB is better as an email device, the iPhone is better for everything else. Unless you need the phone for work email, iPhone by a mile.

How is Siri? Is it as good as the adverts say it is? (Although I'd love to know how it would know you're leaving work. A simple alarm or GPS?)

Forget Siri, but the iPhone 4S is a great phone.

BlackBerry is better for business (better email support, security etc) and not very good for apps.

Android is more open, and is now way out in front of iOS in terms of sales, but still hasn't got the same quality of apps (but that will change very quickly - with many developers now releasing new apps for Android first).

Windows Phone is a very nice OS, and now has 40,000+ apps, but is more about social networking and combining LinkedIn, Twitter, Google Talk, Windows Live, Xbox LIVE etc in one place - doing away with the need for individual apps. The Tile system is also very clever - as they're able to convey live information, so a cross between an app icon and a widget.

Seriously - go and see them all in a store and get proper demos with live and working handsets. No one OS is the best, as they all suit different needs and tastes.

Siri itself isn't the thing that reminds you, it simply uses the 'Reminders' App which is available on older iPhones with the latest software, but you type in the details yourself. This app can set an alert based on when you arrive at, or leave a location (this is based on GPS), or at a set time. For example, I set it to remind me to take something out of the freezer when I arrived home.

My Curve is 2 years old and fine. There was a piece of Watchdog about poor after-sales service with HTCs if they broke down - although, the network covers that on a contract.

PAYG suits my needs too. I'm on giffgaff, which is one of the cheap online-only networks.

To echo the above sentements and as someone currently researching development platforms for mobile phones, get an Android one... If you have a mediocre programming knowlege, you'll appreciate the greater functionality.

I've had iPhones, Blackberry and Android devices. I personally prefer the iPhone but here's my thoughts - hope they help!

Blackberry handsets generally have great battery life and a proper qwerty keyboard. Brilliant for email but pretty useless if you're into your apps. Web browsing is OK - nothing to write home about.

Android can be good, can be awful. Battery life is variable depending on make and model and don't expect the touch screen to be that great on a low-end handset. All Android phones are great for apps and the email/web support is generally excellent. If you're taking the Android route stick to HTC or a high-end Samsung device.

iPhone? Well, I'm writing on one as we speak. I think they're a bit more "polished" than either a BlackBerry or an Android phone - and the app and music support is outstanding. They're very good for emails and web browsing but the battery life is OK at best. Don't bother with the 3GS, look at an iPhone 4 or (if you *must* have Siri, which I don't personally rate) a 4S.

You'll probably start seeing good deals on the iPhone 4 coming through after Christmas as the networks will be trying to clear stock.

I don't think any low end Android devices have resistive touchscreens now. Not that anyone considering an iPhone is likely to want to buy an £80 smartphone anyway.

I'm thinking more of a contract rather than PAYG but thank you all for your help.

As others have said, it is very subjective really.

I can't say I'm a huge expert as I have a 3 year old phone that I believe runs on Java OS

I have to say that the iPhone4 is a nice phone, has a nice bit of speed about it and looks good. I'm just not over keen on Apple stuff personally (I have an iPod Touch and have had problems with it and find it very restrictive as a techie...plus I really don't like iTunes, as reinforced while trying to sync some music tonight)

Blackberrys I seem to hear of problem after problem with - be it cracked screens or them not booting, though I probably hear the worst cases. I have only ever used one once to take a picture and that turned out better than I expected, though the touch sensitive scroll pad caught me out when I couldn't work out why I kept zooming in when I didn't want to!

Android is less restrictive than Apple IOS though I agree it isn't as "shiny" as Apple stuff - used a Samsung budget-ish (circa £110) Android phone (with capacitive screen...generally much better than resistive which I also have a bit of experience with) and found it to be relatively good.

In a different world I was having a play on a new Nokia Lumia 800 (I think) in Carphone Warehouse last week as a friend has just got one, which is a Windows phone - found it be very quick actually, though I know very little else about it and only played with it in demo mode.

And all the above is why I don't want to change my phone as it will take me forever to decide n a replacement that does everything I want without being too costly!

I've a HTC sensation. Amazing handset, higher spec than iPhone and generally free on contracts over 20 a month, or pay as you go considerably cheaper than iphone!

The Sensation is a great handset, and if you don't mind the slightly wayward colours on an AM-OLED screen, the new Motorola RAZR is damn impressive too (and the same resolution display).

Lots of clever software additions on the RAZR, like MotoCAST that will stream anything from your home or work PC (or any other computer with a tiny bit of software installed), or Motoblur that collects social networking content offline and sends it in a compressed format to reduce your mobile data charges (good if you don't have all-you-can-eat data).

It will also get an update to Android 4 next year, but already has a fair few Android 4 features already in there, as Motorola provides a lot of software input in the Google OS (hence Google buying the company this year).

Hardware wise, the RAZR also has a special coating inside and out to repel liquid. It can't be thrown in a pool, but it won't break from being used in the rain or having the odd spill here and there.

HTC also has the Sensation XE and XL, but a word of warning - the XL has a larger screen, but actually a lower resolution (to be honest, I am not quite sure why they released this except for people who don't need such a high resolution but do want a large display for movies etc).

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus also has a 1280x720 pixel display (it's awesome!) and already has Android 4 right now.
