Black X in cab window

I've noticed some trains displaying a yellow piece of paper with a black x on it in the cab window, what does this mean?

Usually indicates a coupling fault. You sometimes see the words 'non mult' under the cross.

Means it is an infantry unit, the numbers underneath are its offensive, defensive and movement points.

It's "Non Multi" sign. Placed in the secondmans windscreen so an oncoming Driver can see that there is a coupler defect or other fault that means the unit cannot be coupled to another at that end, and he should stop and make no attempt to couple. A unit in traffic must only be non multi at one end as if it fails in service it would obviouly be rather problematic to attach an assisting unit.

Did a bin bag over the coupler serve the same purpose? Remember seeing a few of those in CT / Wessex days too.

Yes. but you will often see bags over the couplers in snowy weather too.

Normally a coupler bag is fitted when snow or extreme weather is present or expected, pureky to prevent the accumulation of snow and ice in res pipes, mechanism or electrical connections that could cause coupling problems. They are designed to be fitted and removed reasonably quickly when coupling or uncoupling.
Bags have been/may be fitted to a non multi unit, but more to prevent further damage to the coupler rather than as a warning to a Driver.
