Bite Card

Whilst the BITE card is good in principle, in practise it is becoming more and more difficult to use.

Firstly, not all Burger Kings at Stations accept them. The one at Marylebone is a different type of franchise and doesnt accept the BITE card.

Secondly, and there seems to be an inconsistent policy here offers and promotions seem to be exclulded. Eg previously you would get the discount on 2 bottles of water or coke for £2 now you don't. Previously, you would get the discount off meal deals, now you don't in some places but you do in others. I have been told differing reasons for this (it is only products produced by the retailer that carry the discount and the discount is given only on the sandwich and that means that the meal deal isnt such a good deal as it is.)

I still have one but tend to use it for a tea only and use a loyalty card for further discount. At most mainline stations, there is a supermarket within minutes, Waterloo, Charing Cross. Manchester Picadilly if not a Boots to get a meal deal there.

I think it would help if the scheme was publicised by participating outlets displaying the fact in the window.

From my recollection I can't recall an instance of this.

Odd, most outlets I have come across have a tag advertising the card hanging over the till; I have even seen 1 or 2 window posters in the past.

Maybe there not around up your way I have seen places without the tags.

I know I have seen them around the SWT network, Exeter St David’s, Waterloo, Oxford, Sheffield and Inverness once I have seen one or two I tend not to notice anymore.

Never seen one at a Burger King or in some of the pubs like Euston and the Sloe Bar thing at Waterloo.

If I can't see any promotional material mentioning the card, I always ask forst to make sure it's accepted and whether there are any products I won't get the discount on.

I have seen the advertising material in branches on the same card as the one that states:

'If we don't give you a receipt with your change then your order is free. If you tell us straight away!'

This is usually on or near the till.

I have experienced this with the Pumpkin offer of a £1 bacon or sausage roll when you buy a hot drink. Some places let you have the discount on the full priced drink whilst others won't. Though it is rare not to get the discount which makes it odd when you don't!

I used mine at The Pasty Joint at Waverley the other week with no problem.

Was told no discount on alcohol from the Pumpkin shop on Derby station the other week. Forgot to follow that up.

With regards to use with other offers the T&C does state

This offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer.

I had some rather nice and cheap breakfasts with a pint on return from day on the rails when I stayed in Inverness last year Bit card was accepted with out any issues

If you buy a Bulmers Draught from the Manchester victoria pub not only do you get the discount but they use oversize pint glasses Store abour 1/5 pint extra basically the ice amount... and the people have been known to fill to top if you ask for no ice done that a few times and been pleasantly surprised...

I think in Woolwich I was allowed the full discount but not in Southampton or vv. I was going to send in an email querying the inconsistent policies when I queried it and was told the till took the relevant amount off.

I have got discounts off alcohol at Salisbury station, (ironically a deal) but this was last year.

I was surprised to get a discount off newspapers and magazines that I also purchased with food. I guess that was more of a mistake than anything and one of the reasons why the restrictions were introduced at the beginning of the year.

Most of my train journeys are from Waterloo, Paddington, Southampton Central or Stratford which has either a supermarket or Boots in or within a few mins walk from the station.

very handy for the 2 pubs inside Manchester Piccadilly (Sports + Balcony bar). They used to do £8 4 pint pitchers (inc Grolsch) making it £6.40 ! Think prices may of gone up since, but they both still accept the bite card for discount.

I've had a few issues at BK that take the Bite card but wont discount prices on certain meals. Some time they take it sometimes they dont emailed them and they said its all due to the staff and lack of training.

Shhhh. I think I am right in saying that such a practice is highly illegal and could cost them their license. UK laws prescribe the measures that must be sold and to over or under sell is a contravention. I once heard of a pub that lost its license for giving double measures to celebrate some event.

IIRC it is covered in the Weights and Measures Act. Exact reason why glasses have to hold exactly the right amount OR have a line indicating the fill point.

Correct - acceptable quantities for draught alcohol sales are currently half a pint or a pint - and soon to be 2/3 of a pint as well. Bottled alcohol can be sold in any quantity

In the Upper Crust at Victoria I claimed I had forgotten mine (hadn't applied for it then, shhhh) - got the discount on the £2 for 2 Coke bottles and the very nice brie and bacon baguette!

In the Upper Crust at Bristol Temple Meads I had my card on me and showed it, and didn't get the 2 for £2 on 2 bottles of Coke. Mentioned to him about Victoria (except for the not having my card bit) and he said "computer says no". Needless to say I went thirsty until I found a supermarket!

Unfortunately mileage seems to vary a bit in these places

Wouldnt want to get anyone in trouble but it has worked for me... Camra is campaigning foir oversized pint glasses anywaydue to cutomers never receiving a pint of liquid.

Agreed! Such a nice atmosphere - it's a shame that Bite isn't valid (but understandable - it's not operated by SSP!). In fact, I don't think there's anywhere at St Pancras where you can get Bite discount on alcohol.

Exactly my earlier point. Staff seem to not know when it can be used or when it can't be and there is nothing clear on the website to indicate this.

When I complained to BK about Marylebone they advised me that it was due to a different franchise running that outlet. They gave me some vouchers as a gesture of goodwill that could only be used in the BKs run by these franchises. At the time I was living in Leamington Spa so used Marylebone all the time.
