Birmingham to London, reroute?

Hi,

I have booked tickets to travel with chiltern railways tomorrow morning from birmingham moor street to London marylebone.

I have since been informed that this service will not be running due to repair work. When I check the train times on the Internet on the chiltern website it shows the journey as now being from Birmingham new street to London Euston. Is my ticket valid on his journey? My ticket says the route is high Wycombe, am I allowed to transfer to the other route?

What is your ticket type?

In a worst case scenario, if tickets were not valid on that route, the excess would be the difference between the price you paid and the cheapest ticket for which is valid. For example, if you had an Off Peak Return costing £33.00 (route High Wycombe) the excess to a Off Peak Return (route Any Permitted) costing £44.30 would be £11.30 if going both ways, or half that if going one way. The excess is the same fare on the train as it is from the ticket office.

The National Rail site makes no mention of any easements:

Chiltern Railways
Trains between London Marylebone and Birmingham Snow Hill will be diverted via Aylesbury extending journey times by 40 minutes.
Buses will run between:

• Princes Risborough and Aylesbury / West Ruislip
• High Wycombe and Amersham

A shuttle train service will run between Leamington Spa and Stratford-upon-Avon.
No trains or buses will run between London Marylebone and West Ruislip. Passengers should use alternative London Underground services.
Passengers for Denham Golf Club and Seer Green are advised to request transport at the station Help points.
Wrexham & Shropshire
Trains will be diverted and will not call at Banbury or Leamington Spa.

So you will either have to take a train that is diverted via Aylesbury, or you will have to pay the excess if you wish to travel on the much quicker route on Virgin Trains.

You paid £19.50 for a Super Off Peak Return. If you choose to travel with Virgin, the cheapest available ticket is a Off Peak Return priced at £44.30.

If you wish to upgrade one-way only the excess is £12.40. For both ways it's £24.80. Payable either at the station or on board the train.

On the other hand, if you took London Midland, it may be possible to get a zero fare excess, their Off Peak Return is priced at £17.50.

If the engineering works were not made clear to you when you bought your ticket, you may be able to get a full refund of the £19.50 ticket and then buy a £17.50 ticket for use on London Midland. The £10 admin fee may (I would argue should) be waived in the circumstances. It is worth asking, and if they try to charge the admin fee, get an excess instead. It is usually best to buy walk-on tickets, such as (Super) Off Peak (Day) Single / Return tickets on the day of travel, to avoid the possibility of being charged a £10 admin fee if you wish to obtain a refund.

The Chiltern Railway website is showing services from Moor St to Marylebone.
