Birmingham to Leeds via Doncaster

I'm travelling to Leeds from Birmingham next Friday, returning on Sunday. I'm looking to meet a friend at Doncaster.

Would I need to buy separate tickets or can I simply by a through ticket?

A method that I would be confident in using 99% of the time so that you don't have to worry about the National Routeing Guide:

Does the route seem reasonable? Yes
Does the National Rail Enquiries website, or a train company's website give it as valid itineraries? Yes - I checked on East Coast using origin Birmingham, destination Leeds and via Doncaster.

This would satisfy me that Birmingham to Leeds is valid via Doncaster.

Next, to see if you can legitimately break your journey at Doncaster to meet your friend, as a general rule:
On an Advance ticket - no (though using station facilities is not break of journey, just make sure you travel on your reserved trains)

On an Anytime ticket - always allowed, within the validity of the ticket

On an Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak ticket, you will need to check the restriction code. You can use www.brfares.com - just select the ticket from the list of options for your flow. Birmingham to Leeds carries restriction 2V which does not prohibit break of journey.

Therefore you can use a Birmingham to Leeds "walk-up" ticket to break your journey at Doncaster and resume it later, within the validity of the ticket.

It's absolutely fine on a through ticket.

Birmingham - Leeds Off Peak Return is £56.10. This is valid at any time from 0930 M-F onwards and allows break of journey.

If you want to save money you could buy:

Birmingham - Derby Off Peak Return (£15.60). As above, any train from 0930 M-F and BOJ is allowed.
Derby - Leeds Off Peak Return (£31.10). Any train from 0900 M-F and BOJ is allowed.

The total is around £10 less than the through fare. It gives extra flexibility to anyone travelling back on a weekday as it is valid from 0900. The only downside is that you could not take the scenic route via Manchester on such a combination as you would have to take the usual route via Derby.

In all cases, there are no time restrictions on Off Peak Returns on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays so you can use these tickets at any time on those days.

Are Birmingham New St and Leeds the nearest stations for you? Tickets to/from local stations would probably not be any extra (e.g. Bourneville, Selly Oak etc for Birmingham, or Burley Park etc for Leeds).

The fare from Chester Road to Leeds is the same as Birmingham Stns to Leeds.
The fare from Chester Road to Derby is only £1.10 more than Birmingham Stns to Derby.

So it's better to get the ticket issued from Chester Road. If you do buy the combination of tickets, "splitting" at Derby, then allow extra time at the ticket office to purchase these tickets. (also make sure that the tickets are issued as Off Peak Returns, and not as Off Peak Day Returns)
