Hi I'm going from Birmingham to Lancaster.
Stay in Lancaster for 4 hours.
Then travel from Lancaster to Liverpool.
Stay in Liverpool for 4 hours.
Then travel from Liverpool to Birmingham.
Can this be done on a Friday as an off-peak return journey?

Or I could break my journey in Liverpool and travel back on Sat?
Thinking Fri 22 May? or Fri 29th.

No railcards.

Thank you! Shuggie.

It could be done with a Saver Return Birmingham - Lancaster coming back via Earlestown where you could break journey for
a Cheap Day Return to Liverpool and back

This would cost £53.60 and £4.00

However it would be much cheaper and flexible (i.e. you could get a Desiro/Pendo from Liverpool to Crewe/New Street)
to get:

*** West Midlands Day Ranger @ £16.20

VALID FROM 9AM

NOTE: if using WMDR on Virgin, ask Conductor before boarding "Can I use this ticket on here?". If they ask you where its valid to then you will get on no problem just say Crewe and they will be fine and will let you board as long as the train stops at Crewe.

***Cheshire Day Ranger @ £18.00

***a Standard Day Single from Warringnton B&Q to Wigan North Western @ £3.80

***Lancashire Day Ranger @ £18.00

Total Price £52.20
Saving £25 or more

if you bought 3 x Seperate Single tickets for this journey it would be at least £87 :o

All these Prices are subject to change on May 17th

Lancaster-Birmingham
Lancaster and Birmingham are both routing points.
Lancaster group-Birmingham group:
BP+BS, BS, MW+NC
BP+BS
Lancaster-Manchester-Nuneaton-Birmingham (Can go via Chorley or Wigan)
Lancaster-Warrington-Nuneaton-Birmingham (Can go into Earlstown or Stoke if desired).

BP
Lancaster-Stafford-Birmingham (Same variations in the northwest as above. Can also go via Walsall and/or Rugeley).

MW+NC
Lancaster-Leeds-Sheffield-Derby-Birmingham (Can go into Bradford or Lichfield)
Everything else seems to be a duplicate from earlier.

If you don't mind taking a London Midland Train as far as Crewe and changing there -

A London Midland off-peak return from Nuneaton to Liverpool - £19
Crewe to Warrington Single - £9.30

Anytime return from Liverpool to Lancaster - £15.30 (use outward leg from Warrington to Lancaster)
Use the return portion direct to Liverpool

And the return portion of the Nuneaton ticket to get back to Birmingham

Which comes to £43.60. You can save another £6 if you go for the super-off-peak return to Liverpool but then you can't leave Birmingham before 10:30, or leave Liverpool between 4:30 and 7:30 on Friday when your return.

BTW, May 30th is the FA Cup Final, heading south from Liverpool might get busy on Friday night / Saturday morning.

oh, and if you want to take the direct service, which stops at Warrington - both Birmingham to Liverpool and Liverpool to Lancaster tickets are valid via Warrington.

Interestingly, from next week, it looks like Birmingham to Lancaster (and beyond) off-peak tickets won't be subject to a morning restriction.

If you are wanting to travel on a walk up fare (one you can purchase on the day), then your best bet will be the following.

-West Midlands Day Ranger- £16.20 (valid between Birmingham and Crewe via Stoke or Stafford)
-Crewe to Liverpool Off Peak Day Return £8.80
Total: £25.00

The West Midlands Day Ranger is restricted, as I have previously mentioned, to travel after 0900 and on TOCs of which Virgin is excluded. However in practice travelling on Virgin won't usually be a problem if you ask the guard before boarding.

You can get this even cheaper, and use it on Virgin between BHM and Crewe, by buying a CDR (valid after 09:00) from BHM to Wrexham (valid via Crewe or Shrewsbury, BOJ permitted both ways) for £12.10.

With the CDR Crewe to Liverpool, total cost is then only £20.90.

If you don't mind going via Chester, using this ticket plus a Chester-Liverpool via Birkenhead CDR (£4.40) means you can get the cost down to only £16.50.
