Birmingham-Skegness trains

Hi all, first time posting, and I was looking for some information please. Back in the late 90s-early 2000s, I used to go to Skegness from Birmingham New Street with my nan and grandad.

I was looking for info on the trains that would have serviced this line during that time. They used to run straight through to Skegness when I first started going, and then later we used to change at Nottingham to catch another train to Skegness.

Any info on the trains would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I remember these, from memory it was usually Regional Railways 156s with very little in the way of Central Trains branding.

There used to be a train around 7am from Birmingham to Skeggy via Leicester in the late 90s/very early 2000's. Used to call at Leicester around 8am if I remember rightly and was usually either a 150/153 combo or a 153/156 combo. I believe there was also a Coventry to Skeggy train either an hour before or an hour after the one from Birmingham.

Thank you for your reply. I do remember we used to get dropped off in Birmingham quite early in the morning near to moor street station and then walk to new street from there so it’s likely we go the 7am train

In the early 80s my office overlooked Leicester Station, and I remember seeing the summer early morning trains to Skegness - loco hauled in those days.

I remember catching the 1518 Skegness to Birmingham service in around 2002, this was formed of a single Class 153. Passengers for Grantham with onward connections got priority to board and passengers for other stations who were not able to fit on the service a coach was provided. I believe the 1518 from Skegness used to be the Aberystwyth service unit Wales and Borders took over the Central Trains services from Birmingham to Machynlleth / Aberystwyth / Pwllheli and Chester services.

Living near Boston but studying in Birmingham in the late 1970`s I often used to catch the through New Street to Skegness Saturday only train (getting off at Boston) to go home in the summer. It wass usually 2 x clas 20 with mk 1 stock.
