Hi all

I'm looking for the best way to do a journey from Wolverhampton to Norwich on the weekend of 30/8-1/9.

Looking to travel to Norwich on Fri 30/8 departing after 1600, onto Leicester on Sat 31/8 and then back to Birmingham on Sun 1/9 or Monday 2/9 with that flexibility available.

Would it make sense to split tickets at Peterborogh as is usually worthwhile on Birmingham-Norwich, and break the return journey, or might I be better booking advances for all of the legs apart from Leicester-Birmingham which I need to retain flexibility (two advances, one on each date would be fine)?

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Lee

Birmingham - Norwich is £79.10 for an Off-Peak Return Route Not Via London.

Splitting at Peterborough brings this down to £58.50 (£34.50 + £24), so well worth the split.

Birmingham - Norwich has no Advances apart from via London, and that is coming up at at least £30, and not really fitting around your desired time of travel.

Birmingham - Peterborough is coming up as £16.50 on the 1822 arriving at 2016 (or the one an hour later) for Advance fares. There is a £4 Advance leaving Peterborough on the 2138 arriving Norwich at 2318. On the way back on Saturday, depending on when you are happy to leave Norwich, an Advance to Leicester is showing up as being either £8 for some departures in the morning or £11/15 for some departures in the afternoon. A walk-on single Leicester - Birmingham is £12.40 (except Mondays - Fridays before 0930 or between 1530 and 1815 when it will cost you £16.50).

So in all with Advances you can do the whole trip for £40.90, however you obviously lose the flexibility over walk-on tickets.

In fact, come to think about it, you can get Advances on the 30th between Leicester and Peterborough for £9.50, so instead of buying the £16.50 Advance between Birmingham and Peterborough, if you buy this one, and a walk-on Off-Peak Return Birmingham - Leicester £16.70 (no afternoon restriction, can also be used for getting back to Birmingham on your final day), this reduces it further to £38.20.

Thanks for your help. Went for an £11 evening Norwich-Leicester advance but still saved a lot!

Last time I went to Norwich I went via London on LM and GA advances but both had sales on at the time

I did Ely-Birmingham 18 months ago and found that Stamford and Leicester were the best split points for that flow, may be of use to Norwich as well.

Looking at the dates I wonder if you are co-inciding this with the Class 37 to Lowestoft?

If so, several forum members will be on board the train, and I am sure one of them would be happy to issue you a part fare ticket for Norwich-Lowestoft if you will be joining us ;)
