The people you're more likely to encounter are those a bit merry from about 4am waiting for their first train home.

The station is covered by CCTV and has staff through the night so you should have no problem using your laptop in the waiting room, in fact you'll probably not be the only one.

However, aside from these queries, do you have a friend you could travel with? Either someone from your local area who is also going home, or just a mate who wouldn't mind a few days holiday, assuming your parents would put him/her up?

Alternatively, if you don't mind your folks knowing how skint you are, could they loan you the money to pay for a journey at a more sociable time of day?

ETA could you clarify this bit please as it doesn't really make sense?...

Yeah, sorry was a bit vague in places.
I am coming from Sudbury Suffolk, but that counts as +connections on a VT advance ticket so I was simplifying stuff when I said london, as I wasn't sure at the time where I was coming from, as it could equally have been SSD or COL, both of which are also +connections on a VT advance ticket.

About the house. As a student, I lived in halls this year, but next year I am living in a small house in a village near Bangor. I am currently living in that house despite the next University year not having started yet as lease on my room in halls has run out. I am waiting there because I need to sign paperwork associated with it with the landlord in mid july, because she is busy atm, so I am waiting in the house for her to come here.

In fairness you could get murdered after stepping out your front door or in the local supermarket. No one can answer whether you will be or not just give you an idea. If it bothers you that much then might i suggest you save up a bit of extra cash somehow and get a through ticket and do it daylight hours? if this is what makes you feel safer

I've walked through parts of Birmingham city centre alone in the dead night and been fine, it's actually quiet and by 4 it should start getting light.

I emphasise the word "parts". There are parts of the city centre I wouldn't be comfortable walking through alone in daylight, but these aren't near New Street station.
