Birmingham New Street

Not sure if this is the right section but In my shot time taking photos I haven't heard of a Steam Loco in BNS in recent years.
Is there a Ban on steam locos in New Street???

not that i know off, i think they just don't like routeing specials through New Street because of the congestion issue. They take longer to pull away from station that the normal DMU's and EMU's.

I was under the impression that steam was banned at New Street but I don't know for certain if thats the case.

Apparently Birmingham New Street is classed as an Underground station with a large fire risk, therefore steam is currently banned from the station.

LilLoaf, you will find that quite a few charters pick up and drop off at BNS, so this will have nothing to do with it.

I was told by a family friend and this could be wrong but in the 80's there was quite abit of Hoo Haa after BR basically said ''There can never be a steam loco in Birmingham New Street''.
The first reason told was that the steam caused considerable damage to the OHLE and this was followed by the idea that the smoke would cause disturbance in the city.
Once again could be wrong.

the reason is as mentioned before - railtrack class new st. as an underground station.

no instance, at least in the preservation era, of any steam engine doing damage to the overhead at new st.

although there was a hoo-ha over whether or not 60009 caused a flashover in hampstead tunnel a few years back. Anyone want to comment on this ?

Also a steam loco blew the electrics at Liverpool Street a few years back.

According to someone who was close to the incident, this was caused by a bird flying into the exhaust under the wires which resulted in the bird being blown into the wire and causing it to flash over.

Not so lmao when it trips the juice, then your left with heavy delays, until it's reinstated, because there's no juice to run the various trains that rely on the juice in the first place.
