I have the following itinery:

Friday afternoon Birmingham New Street to Manchester Piccadilly
Saturday morning Manchester Victoria to York
Saturday evening York to Birmingham New Street

Is an off peak return BHM-YRK valid via Manchester and for an overnight break of journey on the outbound leg?

Well, technically the outward portion is valid on the second day too if it wasn't possible to complete the journey on the first day.

But I very much think you'd struggle to establish that here, particularly since you're choosing to take a more indirect route and are starting the journey in the afternoon when it'd still easily be doable to complete the journey.

Thanks for the clarification. I've calculated it will still be cheaper to use the outbound portion to MAN and buy an off peak single MCV-YRK.
