I'll be going with a group of people, all using a railcard and paying individually. Going to Staines weekday during March and returning same day. We need to be at Staines around 9:30 and returning sometime in afternoon (can be after afternoon peak if necessary).

The cheapest I can find is ~£24 return each using 5:50 off New St. arriving at Staines around 8:30. 6:30 off New St. costs costs over £100.

We would like to pay less than £15 for this trip if possible. Passing through London is preferred because we're going to buy something in London but we can skip it if there are no fares via London costing less than £15 return.

We haven't confirmed exact dates yet, but I'd guess 18th March would be the date we're going out.

Advance fares for 18th March is not yet on sale on Virgin Trains according to this page but it would seem that some tickets have already been released.

If you want to do it for under £15, you will need to get in quick as you will need to do it both ways on the cheapest tier Advances, and that may not be easy if you have a large group of people because the quota at the lowest tier on any given train on any weekday morning may not be very big. It would seem to me that the lowest tier fares may have already sold out, or never released in the first place.

Apart from buying the cheapest tier through Advances on Virgin both ways, there is no other way you can do this journey for under £15 return. There is no fare avoiding London that will cost under £15 return.

If you can travel on another day, Friday 20th March still has £6.95 fares on the 0529, and £6.95 fares on the way back on the 1859, 2008, 2108 or 2208 from Staines. I am unable to say how many tickets are available but there should be a minimum of 9 tickets available on these trains as I am not getting any "low availability" warning on WebTIS.

Thanks, there are 3 of us, hopefully it won't be issue.

It looks like that they don't release advance fares after the 5:29 VT departure until after morning peak. I've tried splitting going via Reading. They don't have any advance fares at that time either.

You won't get cheap Advances on XC for that journey at that time of the day.
