In BR days, which routes in the Birmingham New Street area would trains be diverted via?

e.g. would it be unknown for a diverted Euston to Wolverhampton service to be diverted via Camp Hil & Five Ways?

Can anyone remember any unusual diversions?

Can anyone remember any unusual diversions?

Wolves to Birmingham would usually take the avoiding line VIA Bescot and enter from the south into New Street, or if enter New Street from the north VIA the Hamstead and Soho junctions. If avoiding New Street altogether would use Bescot and line through to Stechford direct to NEC.

Other diversions include north to Stafford then back southbound down the Trent Valley to Rugby.

AFICR no but when New Street was being remodelled Birmingham to Norwich class 31s turns used to go that way. Did that a couple of times for the rare track at the time but don't think Euston Wolves went that way.

It'd take quite an effort to get a Euston train running via Camp Hill - would require firstly a diversion via Nuneaton surely, then something preventing the direct route via Proof House being used. One of my colleagues was telling me about his short spell of travelling into Birmingham during the Proof House remodelling - they (from Leicester) did indeed go via Camp Hill and Lifford twice a day!

A summer Saturday Weymouth to Nottingham (I think) via Leicester used to do similar to save reversal in New Street which was incredibly busy on a summer Saturday. I used it once around 1981 with a pair of 31s - it also used the old Nuneaton avoiding line.

I've done Coventry - Nuneaton - New St on a diverted Wolves.
Most unusual to go that way, usually they go Rugby - Nuneaton direct.

They did send Wolves-Euston trains one Sunday I think in the late 90s when the drags via Nuneaton went via Five Ways-Lifford curve-Camp Hill-Nuneaton.

Was it ever known for a Euston to Wolverhampton service to reverse @ Birmingham New Street & then go via Saltley & Sutton Park?
