Hi all

I have the following itinery I wish to make next weekend and wonder if anyone can help with getting the cost down as it's Anytime Single tickets all the way at the moment:

Friday 16 December
Birmingham - Grantham depart after 17:00
- Anytime Single £33

Saturday 17 December
Grantham - Lincoln depart as early as possible
Lincoln - Scunthorpe depart after 16:00
- Anytime Single £30.50 or individually £9.40 and £12.30

Sunday 18 December
Scunthorpe - Wolverhampton depart before 13:00
possible break of journey at Leicester
- Anytime Single £44.50

I was thinking a split ticket at Derby? I have a nNetwork zones 1-5 season if it helps in the West Midlands. Or I could split at Tamworth with Birmingham-Tamworth singles (£6.50 each way) and an East Midlands 3 in 7 Rover (£71). Or if time was on my side split with my season at Coventry...

I have researched further and answered my own question really. I can't better the price of splitting my season ticket with a rover at £71 with the following itinerary:

FRIDAY
Birmingham 1610
1630 Coventry 1642
1700 Nuneaton 1722
1750 Leicester 1755
1827 Nottingham 1837
1908 Grantham

SATURDAY
Grantham 1110
1123 Newark NG 1206
1236 Lincoln

Lincoln 1835
1907 Barntby 1953
2008 Scunthorpe

SUNDAY
Scunthorpe 1208
1307 Sheffield 1324
1434 Leicester

Leicester 1718
1744 Nuneaton 1811
1834 Coventry 1840
1905 Birmingham 1920
1937 Wolverhampton

Going out direct from Birmingham-Nuneaton would get me in Grantham 12 minutes earlier so not worth paying extra for.
Coming back getting a single from Nuneaton-Birmingham could get me into Wolverhampton by 1848 for an additional £8.50.

A Birmingham-Scunthorpe Anytime return is valid via Nottingham, Newark, Lincoln and Barnetby, as well as via Doncaster. That's £59.50. The outward portion of the Anytime return is valid for five days, the return portion for one month.

You could break your outward ticket at Nottingham/Newark, get a single to Grantham, then a single back to Newark (or the hourly bus from Grantham-Lincoln) the following morning to continue on to Lincoln, Barnetby and Scunny. But that's liable to be more than £71.

£59.50+Notm-Grantham £7.40+Grantham-Newark £6.90=£73.80
I don't know how much a single on the bus from Grantham-Lincoln is.

thanks for the suggestions. i don't fancy the number 1 bus so i got the rover in the end as it covers a number of routes should plans change

Change of plan now and it doesn't look like I'm going to Scunthorpe on the Saturday night. I still want to do Grantham Friday night and Lincoln in the daytime.

I'll be returning my East Midlands 3 in 7 for a full refund, so does anyone have any advice on what I should buy instead?

Birmingham-Grantham is £36 off peak return but I wonder if a combination of tickets involving Nottingham and/or Newark might be better.

Are either the Lincolnshire or East Midlands Day Rangers any good for your Saturday trips?

They are not ideal (the Lincs one excludes Scunthorpe for instance) but I found them useful for circular trips recently.

You can fit in the Barnetby-Gainsborough Central line on a Saturday!

Neither include Grantham-Newark North Gate.

Not fussed about travelling on lines for travelling's sake as been on most of the lines including Gainsborough-Barnetby line when I lived in Lincs for 6 years. This is purely for getting from A to B (and then C and D etc)

I am going to buy a Birmingham-grantham off peak return at £36 and I've established that Grantham-Lincoln is valid via Nottingham as well as Newark or Sleaford so a Grantham-Lincoln off peak day return at £12.50, or if I have time for a longer journey, a Nottingham-Lincoln return at £9.70.

Birmingham-Grantham is valid via Nottingham or Peterborough so this also means I can go outward and return via Leicester if I wish.
