Hi,

I'm travelling to the Sunday of the Nottingham test on 14th July. I never though to check but the first connecting train from Birmingham doesn't arrive in Nottingham until 11:45.

I've found a route changing at Chesterfield, which gives an arrival time of 10:57, using the 09:03 from Birmingham and the 10:23 from Chesterfield, but this isn't a valid route as far as I can see.

I'm looking for as cheap a ticket as possible for the above journey with a return, ideally returning via the direct route via beeston and long eaton. Walk up fares only, there will be two adults with no railcards, one travelling from Birmingham and one from Tamworth.

Any help gratefully recieved. I've got as far as a return to alfreton which at £33.40 is a bit steep relative to the Nottingham fare of £17.00.

You can add on a Nottingham - Chesterfield CDR for £12.70. Valid Nottingham - Derby - Chesterfield - Nottingham.

NRE doesn't allow journey planning for 14th June yet so timetables may be subject to change still. I wouldn't plan a journey on a Sunday based on any other Sunday just in case there are variations to the timetable.

That said, this should work (from Traveline East Midlands, using the correct date), but confirm it nearer the time:

0903 Birmingham New Street - Derby 0940 (this train calls at Tamworth at 0918)
walk (or take Arriva Derby bus 40) to Derby bus station
1015 Yourbus Bus citylink to Nottingham, arrive 1040 Upper Parliament Street, Stop U5 (bus info https://catchyourbus.co.uk/citylink/index.html)

Or for a comfier journey on an air conditioned, leather seated coach, the Red Arrow leaves 5 minutes later ;) https://www.trentbarton.co.uk/services/redarrow/maps-and-times

If you're unfamiliar with Nottingham, be cautious that both of these get you to Upper Parliament Street (and this isn't the terminus point of either bus) towards the northern side of the city. Trent Bridge is pushing 2 miles away from here.

Edit: Just to add more confusion(!), from here it's a very short walk (http://goo.gl/maps/LN03Z) to Friar Lane where you can catch any of services Xprss, Radcliffe Line, Keyworth Connection or Cotgrave Connection to stops surrounding Trent Bridge.

If you take any of the above services to Trent Bridge, take the red arrow from Derby. £5 buys you a ZigZag for one day of unlimited travel on their buses.
