Billy Connolly's Route 66

I don't know if anyone has been watching this but it has inspired me to finally do the trip. I have been thinking about doing a long US road trip for awhile. Either Seattle to San Diego or Miami to Los Angeles but after watching this I have decided to do Chicago to LA via as much of the old 66 as possible.
The other half has agreed to letting me choose what we do for our holidays in 2013 as it will be my 50th so thats what I am going to choose !
Let the planning begin !

Had a Mustang last year to do Las Vegas - San Francisco via Death Valley and Yosemite NP. Convertible of course !!

We were planning to do the trip in 2013 but after watching the program we are thinking again.

There seems to be little along the route that would interest us untill CA which we have already done for the most part.

Now we are looking at the east coast and then up to Canada.

I watched the series, but was rather disappointed.

I'm sure any coast to coast drive across the USA would be memorable, but the Route 66 destinations that Billy Connolly visited just seemed to be a few American eccentrics and ex-performers seeing out the autumn of their lives.

Was at one stage planning to do a circular route from New York, down through the southern states to California, up the West Coast and back through Chicago and the Mid West to New York. Still in the planning stages but I'll do it eventually.

I'm planning on doing that but on the rails rather than a car (though an American road trip is something I'm also eyeing up). My route was New York across to Chicago, then the long journey over to Emeryville (San Francisco), before heading down to LA onto New Orleans and finally back to New York. Train fare is about £350 and covers about 7000 miles which works out at about 4p per mile which is pretty good value I think

There's a really long road in South Africa called the R56 which is meant to resemble Route 66. Quite a nice stretch to drive along.

I haven't done Route 66, but I did do Highway One in Canada. I drove from Nova Scotia to Vancouver in two weeks.

An unbelievable experience. I saw real tumbleweeds in Saskatchewan! I do plan to do Route 66 one day - to get my kicks, as Chuck Berry would say.

I can't get up the energy to go to Ameri-cay, but one day I may do our own Route 66 all the way from Middlesbrough to Workington.

Really want to do Route 66 when I'm older, as well as any other US roads that take me from place to place through mile after mile and nothing. Top Gear did a special a while ago in the US, they travelled from Bonneville to somewhere in the South West, along what is dubbed as 'America's Lonliest Road', as 99%+ of the journey is nothing but desert / fields.

If I could find a hire company who offered them I would, although I wouldn't be too confident about taking on a 2500 mile journey in a car nearly 40 years old !!

Looked at doing it by train, but think for the experience I'd drive. Also need to do it when the price of gas (compared to over here) is still low.
