Rumour has it that the barriers have been suffering from uncommanded state changes, hence no fast trains down the Arun Valley today.

In other words the barriers have been going up and down without being instructed to do so.

I read elsewhere that Billingshurst is still under local operation (IE box/crossing keeper), and hasn't gone over to the radar stuff yet. Not sure how true that is though!

It was the level crossing at Billingshurst and it was serious enough to cause an almost 24 hour closure. There was ONE incident that caused the closure yesterday, serious in itself, but the barriers were NOT going up and down without being instructed. I will let Network Rail answer the technical stuff!

The crossing is under local control, not sure how long for and it does look weird at the moment with the full booms that are not yet in use already in place up in the air, whilst the current booms are still being used. I would be surprised if that hasn't caused a few phone calls.

If the barriers are under local control, are they worked from the station or by CCTV from Three Bridges (considering Billingshurst box is long gone)?

I heard elsewhere that the LIDAR sensors were too sensitive and being activated by dirt being flung up from passing traffic.

Local control might be however they was controlled before, or a crossing control using the pedestal controls

A crossing controlled from an adjacent box will normally have its controls mounted on a pedestal next to a window overlooking the crossing - whereas local control normally refers to operation by someone other than the signalman who normally controls the crossing, using the local control unit immediately adjacent (although the signalman might have cause to use the local control unit if, for some reason, they can't be operated from the pedestal as normal!).

But the signal box has been abolished!

It'll still have a controlling (or supervising, probably a more appropriate term for MCB-OD crossings) signal box though - there'll be a local control unit of some sort (usually just a little grey cabinet) to enable a level crossing attendant to take local control if necessary. Perhaps that's how it's being worked in the interim, if the controlling box has been abolished before the new kit (supervised from elsewhere) has been commissioned?

Ah that would make sense then, thanks for clarifying

And again this afternoon:

Incident created 02/05/2014 16:11
Last updated 02/05/2014 17:25

A problem at a level crossing at Billingshurst means journeys are being delayed by up to 20 minutes between Horsham and Arundel.

Rumored that trains are being cautioned over it after orders from the ORR.

Full automatic control of the crossing - without LIDAR - is due to be commissioned next weekend. It's currently under local control, no idea why it's got it's problems though.

I don't think it has anything to do with LIDAR, and more about the barriers raising themselves (that's what I have heard internally)

Billingshurst MCB-OD was worked in local crossing clear mode during the 8 weeks it took to convert, from a small container adjacent to the the downside barrier with an attendant 24/7 and supervised by the signallers at TBSAC panel 7. The OD equipment came into use Thursday 15th May, the attendant was withdrawn and full automatic working commenced.

Has it gone wrong again? Seems to be level crossing issues again on the line.
