National rail reporting a ‘low speed’ derailment in the Bilbrook area. Trains between Wolverhampton/Shrewsbury but also Wolverhampton/Stafford (not sure why?) affected.

Disruption expected till 12pm tomorrow.

Presume it wasn’t a passenger train and that everyone is hopefully safe.

6F05 1931 Shrewsbury Coton Hill to Leicester Humberstone Road has had a slow speed derailment at the rear of the train entering Oxley up loop, causing what sounds like quite a lot of damage to the infrastructure.

Shrewsbury lines are closed though it looks like WMR have managed to run at least a bit of a service using the crossover at Codsall as a turn back and Avanti currently can't access Oxley depot which is causing them issues.

Not accessing a depot this late a night is certainly going to be challenging.

With Avanti not being able to access Oxley Depot where what will happen or did happen to trains due to be stabled there overnight?

Are any trains actually stuck at Oxley Depot?

Looking at Realtimetrains from yesterday it happened before trains started arriving for the night, some sets out stabled at various stations including Wolverhampton, Stafford, New St and Birmingham International.

Where is this derailment?

Rail passengers are set to be disrupted for the rest of the day on multiple routes after a freight train derailed.

An investigation is under way into how the train came off the tracks at low speed near Bilbrook in the Wolverhampton area, Network Rail (NR) confirmed...
The news article says Wolverhampton area and affecting trains to Stafford and Shrewsbury. It mentions damage to the OHLE.

But then says it is near Bilbrook, which is on the Telford line. I guess this is the BBC's appalling lack of knowledge in geography?

EDIT:
These photos have been shared with me from unknown sources, showing derailed wagons from the incident.
Pictures show a wagon split between two lines, indicating points that have been run through and sent a wagon two ways.

It’s next to Oxley depot which is on the Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury line. So Bilbrook is not a bad description. The line is also electrified at this point to allow access to Oxley depot.

In all fairness to the bbc they lifted that directly off national rail.

"In all fairness to the bbc they lifted that directly off national rail." That is the usual excuse for everything the BBC gets wrong or misleading. They just copy stuff from other sources without checking anything.

"So Bilbrook is not a bad description." Oxley would surely be a better description, it would actually make sense then. Sorry I just have a thing about our National broadcaster constantly getting things wrong. If I read anything on the BBC my immediate response is do I believe it.

To be fair to the BBC the National Rail Enquiries Disruption page is IMHO very misleading;

There was a low speed derailment in the Wolverhampton area yesterday evening. This means that all lines between Wolverhampton and Stafford / Shrewsbury are currently disrupted.

When I first read this (at 0530 today!) I took it to mean that the derailment was at or very near Wolverhampton North Junction, but this is not as we know the case and the route between Wolverhampton and Stafford is not physically affected, at all. Any disruption is minor and due to a lack of trains!

Avanti can't access the depot at Oxley, iirc, so there's disruption as a result of that. At least, that was the case earlier

They've used National Rail - seems a sensible way of them checking the details. You'd expect National Rail to be an accurate source of information for incidents on the railway.
Sorry I just have a thing about our National broadcaster constantly getting things wrong. If I read anything on the BBC my immediate response is do I believe it.
What else do you expect them to do in this case? You are massively over-reacting...

But taking information off National Rail should be acceptable as that information is provided by the relevant TOC.
If information on National Rail is wrong, blame the TOC.

Thats true for most ‘journalism’ these days in fairness. I just don’t get the criticism for the BBC but not National Rail.

There is disruption yes, but major? The line between Wolverhampton and Stafford is not blocked and almost all trains are running normally, very much unlike between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury!
Inability to access the main depot for Avanti services from/to the Midlands is pretty major! There'll be fewer trains available.

Anyway it's all still ongoing.

West Midlands Trains website says not reopening today 07/05 https://www.westmidlandsrailway.co....-suspended-between-telford-wolverhampton-0705

I agree, but again, what is the 'Major disruption between Wolverhampton and Stafford' as stated, still today, on the National Rail Enquiries Disruption page? A Realtime trains line-up of all passenger trains at Penkridge between 0500 and 1000 today shows precisely one cancellation, 1S39 0707 Birmingham New Street-Glasgow Central, and even that is only cancelled between New Street and Crewe!

They’re pretty good if you email them a correction - you probably won’t get a response, but the article will get updated.

Difficult one. The BBC quoted Network Rail that gave confusing information. My gripe with the BBC is that these are not isolated incidents. That reprint other people's stories with no verification. OK in this instance I don't have detailed knowledge of Wolverhampton. The last time I was there was from High Wycombe via Snow Hill to the low level station. Oxley shed had a lot of steam engines. But wanting to see where this incident was as soon as I looked up Bilbrook on a map I saw something wasn't right. Would the BBC be expected to know that, somebody in the main office probably not but no excuse for the local West Midland office to suspect something wrong. Surely phone call to the press office to verify. Call me pedantic but how much of what the BBC reports is rubbish? Our opinions are base on what we see reported. Cut and pasting somebody else's inaccurate story isn't news reporting.

Rail magazine reported on Friday the points moved under the train due to a faulty track circuit

RAIL understands that a failed track circuit led to the points changing back towards the Up main line as the rear wagon passed over.

Which maybe suggests a wrong-sider with the rear of the train undetected and a new ‘normal’ route called towards Wolverhampton as the signalling system determined it safe to do so?

(NB. Just trying to envisage the ‘how’ of what Rail is suggesting.)

Possibly the points are self-restoring to provide trapping protection?

So our national broadcaster should initially use information provided by an accredited outlet of the industry concerned, but then change it because Kevin off the internet says it’s wrong?

They have changed stuff when I have contacted them, although I've always included a Internet link(s) to back up my information/what I'm saying.
Unfortunately it seems the BBC don't 'verify' every article they publish even though they have a department to do so (BBC Verify). As I've seen several articles which haven't been researched well and just repeated a factually incorrect press release.

Errrr well it was wrong. It wasn't Bilbrook was it. In this case it appears the source was incorrect. Why say it was Bilbrook if it was Oxley?

Not Iron Maiden Steve Harris I take it. Can't remember what it was but recently I picked them up on something and they amended that also so they do change things that are wrong if pointed out to them.

The exact location is really a non issue - the Wolverhampton area and the route affected (Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury) is all the average passenger needs to know. And in any case the incident is now over:

There was a low speed derailment in the Wolverhampton area on Tuesday evening. Lines have now reopened and trains are running as scheduled.

It wasn’t just Wolverhampton/Shrewsbury route affected though. Wolverhampton/Stafford was as it was Oxley not Bilbrook.
