Yesterday I travelled on this journey for the first time in over 20 years and I was very surprised that most of the route from Bidston to the Welsh border was still jointed track (as I remember it travelling on a class 101 with the blinds open behind the driver.....) and after the border it was all welded rail. It made me appreciate the technology of welded rail, but thinking about it why is it still jointed? I live in Devon now and off the top of my head cant think of many places (if any) that so much of the route jointed.
