The crossover will be Country end of Charlton.

There is already a crossover Country end...

TL425 + TL427 are getting new Junction Indicators to take you from the Down North Kent. We have been told to accept it as a normal signalled move. Wrong side into Charlton and back across at TL443 (Country end of Charlton) From what our brief was saying was if there is a unit on platform 2, this will allow you to pass via the up platform. On my map it looks like this will signal you through the existing shunt move (852A/B points)

But I’m not sure that is the plan.

Is there a plan ? That is where the derailment happened a few years ago. (the London end shunt)

The crossover primarily enables you to turn back up trains and send them back down towards Dartford. As you can bidi along the Up line, you can terminate a down train, and send it back towards London.

We do this already, although I haven't done it for a long while now. It's another rare one. For it to become a new, potentially regular move I am a little suspicious. The rarity doesn't seem to justify installation of a new ground position signal and allow a 12-Car turnback, which should still require a second Driver.

Ahh! Of course you can. For some reason, I thought it was unsignalled! The biggest difference then is that you can pull a train out of the down platform, and use the shunt to send it back towards London, which I believe isn’t currently possible as there is no shunt. And of course, you can run BiDi over the Up line.

That crossover near Angerstein you mention is already in place as I understand it, as it’s what the Up freight uses to cross into Angerstein. It’s just now it is possible to use the up line in the down direction. It would be handy for points issues etc at Charlton Jct!

I don’t think it will become a regular thing. It’s a possibility for terminating short, or if there is engineering works/issues further down the line!

You are correct there is no shunt signal country end of Charlton but it will be installed for the re-signalling & Re control of the Blackheath/Charlton area to Three Bridges ROC which should be completed over Easter Weekend. But if they do turn backs using this shunt they will have to be 4 or 5 car trains otherwise 2 drivers will be need as there is no walkway. I believe the move from L425/427 signals will be added at the same time.

Correct it will be. Plus the Greenwich lines being relocked, and axle counters being the train detection. Unfortunately there isn’t much in the way of improvements

The crossover will be Country end of Charlton. The most it will give is to allow a freight to be signalled out of angerstein, wrong direction over the Up line, and into the up platform. Potentially, if you had 2 locos you COULD then start it back up from Charlton.

But I’m not sure that is the plan.

Only with dispatch staff presumably unless new monitors are being put in.

Or trains that driver can walkthrough like Class 377s maybe?
