Beware ScotRail pricing

I noticed that ScotRail, for journeys that require an overnight stop, now show "Split Ticket" ... and a higher fare for the last train on day of departure.

For example, the Anytime Day Single from Kingussie to Wick is £41.

If you take the late train from Kingussie, then the 0700 to Wick, they charge £43.30. The Split Ticket being two Anytime Singles, Kingussie Inverness then Inverness Wick.

However this is incorrect as the ticket at £41 can be used to complete your journey the next day (I think it has to be the first service the next day)

Other ticketing sites charge £41.

Will try to find other examples.

An Anytime Day Single is not valid to continue the journey the next day, it is only valid until 0430 on day two with no option to extend past that aside from if special dispensation is given in case of disruption. You are thinking of an Anytime Single (valid unconditionally for two days) or (Super) Off Peak Single (valid for an overnight break "if it is not possible to complete the journey on day 1" or somesuch wording). Did they change the ticket type for this journey recently?

If other sites are issuing that ticket for use across two days they should not be doing so.

Given the infrequent service on the Far North Line it would seem to me that this would be better as an Anytime Single so you could do that overnight stop, though.

Even Gretna green and Dunbar to Wick are anytime day singles with validity of on date shown.

I'd agree an overnight stop would be ideal on such a long journey.

It's curious when the return is an Anytime Return, valid for 5 days on the outward and one month on the return.

That is entirely incorrect. If the journey cannot be completed in one day then you can always continue it the next day, this applies to all journeys and tickets even where there may be other itineraries possible in one day.

This is not correct for Anytime or (Super) Off Peak Day tickets. Validity ends at 0430 and all travel must be completed by then unless dispensation is given due to disruption.

It used to be correct (you used to be able to continue without break of journey provided you started by a certain time, 0200 I think) but that ceased to be the case at one of the simplifications.

You are I suspect thinking of the debate on the meaning of the "cannot be completed" wording on (Super) Off Peak (not Day) tickets.
