If you have a ticket for a journey requiring a transfer between London Terminals, can you take any reasonable tube route? The example I have in mind is Stansted Express to Paddington, where it’s faster to cut the corner and take the tube from Tottenham Hale than to go to Liverpool Street and take the Elizabeth Line. I was wondering if as the latter is technically a National Rail line, there is some ticketing rule requiring that it be used.

As a further question, can you break that tube journey in the middle? We will be travelling at lunchtime and it may be good to stop in London for a meal.

Thanks in advance!

You can take an any appropriate route between the relevent London Terminals. This can include the Elizabeth Line and Thameslink but you are not mandated to use them.

You can exit the tube journey en-route (although this isn't always straightforward as some staff will try and claim you can't) but if your ticket will not allow you to resume the underground portion of your journey.

You are allowed to break your transfer journey once and leave the Underground, Elizabeth line or DLR at any intermediate station. For example, if you are travelling on the Underground between Victoria and Euston, you can exit at Oxford Circus. However, if you subsequently wish to continue your journey by Underground you will have to purchase another ticket or use pay as you go to travel to Euston.
