Better Sunday service

I have noticed that there are a few stations on the network that have a significantly better service on a Sunday than they do on a weekday. The ones I have noted are:

Lakenheath
Heysham Port
Chapleton
Portsmouth Arms

All the above have at least twice as many Sunday trains timetabled to stop as they do on a weekday (which in Lakenheath's case is none).

Does anyone know of any more stations that have at least a doubling of their service on a Sunday?

Probably for walkers. Middlewood is another - two-hourly on weekdays, hourly on Sundays.

I'm quite familiar with Beaulieu Road having used it to access the nearby Ferny Crofts Scout Camp. The trains aren't frequent, but are at times that are, with a bit of planning, reasonably usable to get to/from camp and for day trips, FWIW - not really a Parly!

Middlewood was reduced to a 2 hourly (Same as weekdays) service about 4 years ago.

Church and Oswaldtwistle has 3 services every 2 hours on a Sunday versus an hourly service weekdays so not double but certainally an increase.

Also everyone's favourite Teesside Airport.

I think as well some of the football ground stations receive more trains on Sundays if the team there is playing.

Northern call hourly 7 days a week.
East Midlands Trains have 2-3 journeys on weekdays but 6-9 on Sundays, giving an almost half hourly Sunday afternoon service. Mad.....

Hawarden Bridge on the Bidston-Wrexham line. Only three northbound and four southbound calls Monday-Saturday, but on Sundays every train on the line stops there, so there are six trains in each direction.

Though hardly badly served, I'd say places like Harold Wood and Brentwood do better on Sundays when the Southend trains stop all day. That's a couple of quicker services to London throughout the day

Similarly, Dalreoch, Dumbarton Central and Dumbarton East, whilst seeing fewer services overall (4tph versus the weekday 6tph) do get the choice of Glasgow Queen St or Glasgow Central on Sundays, whereas on weekdays everything goes through Queen St.

PS The 2tph that start at Dumbarton Central on weekdays are always very lightly loaded until past Dalmuir, in my experience at least...

Beaulieu Road can get surprisingly busy on Saturdays and Sundays in the summer. The most that i have seen is 16 passengers board a train a Beaulieu Road once on a very hot summer day. Although i did once see 8 passengers board there on a weekday evening as well. Beaulieu Road gets a lot busier than you would expect.

How about Clitheroe-Hellifield. No direct service on weekdays, but a through train from Blackpool to (Carlisle) on summer sundays.

What's worse unlike most other "no Sunday service" routes the Marston Vale also has no Bank Holiday service. This can result in two days in a row of no service e.g. at Easter, or three days at Christmas.

I don't know if it has more trains in total on a Sunday going westwards, but it certainly has a better spread of trains on a Sunday than a weekday, when it has only one train departing for stops to Pewsey and beyond before 12.00 noon.

The principal stations between Newbury and Westbury also have a better service westbound on winter Saturdays than on summer Sats.:cry:

Not sure this counts but brighton gets double the frequency of limited stop gwr trains from bristol etc including a sunday only working that begins from romsey (or used to!) and a late night service that used to be ecs from brighton to portsmouth harbour

Southern also provides a better coastway west service on sunday with the victoria trains routed via hove from chichester calling only worthing shoreham hove

Last train from Norwich to Brundall Gardens is 22:36 on Sunday's but 21:40 the rest of the week. Same the other way round where it's 23:43 on a Sunday but other days 22:40.

It's actually rather bad.

Wetheral, for example, gets the following services.

To Newcastle: 0906/1008/1208/1608/1808
To Carlisle: 1035/1138/1338/1635/1938/2144

Stations Newcastle to Hexham, then Haltwhistle and Carlisle, get a generally hourly service.

The Manx ferry goes to Birkenhead, not Heysham on Sundays - unless its summer and if the catamaran is also running. Sunday service to Heysham would usually be a bit pointless

If we include that then there is the Waterloo to Portsmouth service at 0.50 Monday morning. Every other night of the week last service is 23.45. If I'm going to a concert at the O2 and I am travelling back on the Portsmouth line, I will choose a Sunday night gig date over a Saturday night or Friday night one.

It's one of the few times where I prefer to go out on a Sunday night than say a Friday or Saturday.

There is a better service from Haywards Heath to Chichester and Portsmouth on a Sunday. One an hour. During the week nothing. Takes about 1 hour 30 minutes on Sundays and 1 hour 45 to 2 hours during the week.

The government once talked about electrification saving 20 minutes from London to Cardiff. We'll you could save that to Portsmouth from Haywards Heath if you travel on a Sunday, engineering works notwithstanding. This Sunday you looking at about 2 hours 30 - 45 minutes with some of that thrown in.

Of course, on Sundays they do also lack the express services. In the week, the Balloch trains stop via Singer, the Cumbernauld trains stop via Dalmuir and the Helensburgh trains run non-stop Dalmuir to Hyndland. The latter train is markedly faster between these two stations (9 minutes v 14), and offers a c5 minute change at Partick or Hyndland onto the Argyle line.

So I suppose "better" is somewhat subjective. They do have better choice, but a longer journey time and lower frequency.

The reason for low passenger numbers on the (new) Cumbernauld trains via Yoker will be this express service. The Cumbernauld trains leave Dumbarton Central at xx:26 and xx:56, arriving into Charing Cross at xx:01 and xx:31. However, the express trains to Edinburgh leave at xx:12 and xx:42, getting into Charing Cross at xx:06 and xx:36. The arrival times are very similar, so very few people would opt to spend more time on a stopping train to get in a few minutes earlier when they can leave about 15 minutes later and get in at around the same time.

I would, cos on the Cumbernauld line (or indeed the Balloch line) you'll probably get a 318 or 320 instead of those Junipers
