This is the 1st time I've ever seen this happen, when there's a better service on a Sunday than Saturday! Haslemere - Clapham direct is hourly today, but doubles tomorrow. I can't see any engineering work that would affect the timetable today. Is there any particualr reason why SWR cannot run half their trains today?

On (Mondays-Fridays and) Saturdays there are 3tph Waterloo-Portsmouth; Clapham Jn is only served by 1tph, the slowest of these.*
On Sundays there are 2tph Waterloo-Portsmouth, with different stopping patterns to weekdays, but both call at CLJ.
Both today and tomorrow the booked service is scheduled to run.
I am afraid you misread the journey planner :)

*before 2020 there were 4 and 2 respectively. The 4th has not been reinstated, to the annoyance of at least one forum member :) .

Monday to Friday it's actually only 2tph to Portsmouth for most the day, with 1tph to Haslemere, that being the service that calls at Clapham Junction. On Saturday the stopping train runs through to Portsmouth & Southsea although it is looped in both directions at Haslemere by a faster service.

In general, the service provision to Clapham is better on Sundays than weekdays & Saturdays. On Sundays, all the SWML fast services (Weymouth, Exeter, etc.) stop at Clapham, but not on weekdays & Saturdays.

Haddenham & Thame Parkway is arguably better served on a Sunday than weekday or Saturday. Apart from the 1st train to Oxford, from Oxford or from Birmingham all other trains stop. Even the Birmingham fasts like the 10:34 to Marylebone which doesn’t call at High Wycombe.

Meaning 2 trains to Oxford on a Sunday, 1 Mon-Sat, and 3-4 To/from Marylebone, normally 2 Mon-Sat with a couple of peak extras.

Same with the Oxted line. 2tph Victoria-East Grinstead on weekends but only 1tph Mon-Fri off-peak (in peak times I think it's roughly 3-4tph).

Berney Arms, on the line between Norwich and Great Yarmouth, gets 10 trains (five each way) stopping on a Sunday, including this weekend, but only four trains (two each way) the rest of the week, including Saturdays

Similar situation at Buckenham too (and AFAIK Lakenheath) - much better Sunday service

That’s historical really as the line via Acle never opened on winter Sundays with everything going via Reedham. Sundays in summer generally saw alternate trains going via Acle when the service was enhanced. Remember too that Berney Arms had quite a community living there at one time and until the late 1980s trains would call even in the hours of darkness.

Around 15-20 years ago a deal was struck with NXEA/NR to allow the Acle line to open throughout the year on Sundays and an hourly service introduced between Norwich & Yarmouth (2-hourly on each route) in exchange for removing the franchise committed daily loco-hauled services to/from Liverpool Street.

Beaulieu Road is the classic in my area.

It has seen an hourly Sunday service since at least 1997.

However, I don't think it's ever had an hourly service during this period Mon-Sat, even though for much of the time it could have been done easily. There is an hourly "stopping" service over the line but for some unbeknown reason the stop is skipped alternate hours, even though the stop could be added without messing up the path.

In some years during this period there was no stopper over this section of line at all, the Poole fast stopped at Ashurst, and Beaulieu Road had almost no off-peak service at all - so it has been even worse!

Can't remember when the hourly Mon-Sat service ended, but it was still present in the September 1991 timetable and had alnost certainly been present before that since the electrification in 1967. Probably sometime in the 1992/93 period which was notable for cuts on the "South Western" before things started improving from around 1995 onwards - but not for Beaulieu Road.

Granted it's a quiet station but at this time of the year in particular, and on Saturdays for around half the year, it sees decent use from New Forest visitors - so could do with an hourly service.

Another case of the "pointless omission of a stop" often seen nowadays (see also XC and the next-door station, Brockenhurst).
