Bethnal Green

I've always wondered why Bethnal Green station only serves the WA mainline, anybody know why they didn't add extra platforms for the E lines on the GEML? I guess passengers at Bethnal Green will either be going to or from London, and the central line also serves there, but seems odd really.

It used to and the platform edges are still there I believe.

Couldnt tell you when or why it stopped serving the GEML

The station had two platforms on the slow GE lines before the LNER electrification. When the electrification was undertaken, the old slow lines became the 'Main' lines, and the fast lines became the 'Electric' lines. Thus the platforms were in the wrong place. The Ilford flyover was built to swap the lines back to enable the car sheds to be fed into the Electric lines. With the extended Central Line tube opening at the same time (1946) it was probably felt that the GE services didn't need to call at Bethnal Green (BR) any more.

Probs more to do with the Central line & the fact that ALL the use of the other lines is so intense during the peak that another station is the very last thing needed here.

The GE platforms are Bethnal Green would now be on the "fast lines" I think. So ueless.
