Want to go to the Heath Robinson Museum on Friday, leaving about 9:30 to use off-peak trains. Two travellers with senior railcards and railcards added to Oyster cards. Oldie bus passes.

Heath Robinson Museum
Pinner Memorial Park
West End Lane
Pinner HA5 1AE.

Website says museum is ten minutes walk from Pinner station on the Metropolitan line.

I'm thinking train MKC-Watford junction then what from there?

Suggestions are: Lioness line from Watford to Hatch End station then bus to Pinner station and then walk or the 725 (direction Heathrow) to Rickmansworth station and then the Metropolitan to Pinner.

Or do we go into Euston, walk to Euston Square and then take the Metropolitan back to Pinner. Seems counter intuitive going into Euston and then back out again but maybe that's the easiest way to go?

And what ticket to buy - zone 1-6 travelcard from MKC or return train ticket to Euston or Watford and use Oyster?

Your thoughts please. Thanks.

Bus to Aylesbury, Chiltern to a suitable interchange thence Met to Pinner? Or if a car is available consider driving to Aylesbury Vale Parkway (parking just over £3, free on Sundays).

Other than that I'd go via Euston/Euston Square rather than faffing.

Not sure regarding the cheapest fare for either option I'm afraid.

Train to Watford Junction, bus W30 or any service to Rickmansworth except the 724 to station approach then 10 mins walk to Watford MET and train to Pinner.
Returning the W30 runs every 12 mins from Watford MET between 1624 and 1824, but it does go a bit of a trip round and takes 30 mins to get to the Junction

I'd get the train to Watford Junction/Bushey, overground to Hatch End, and then a H12 from there to Pinner

Although just remember generally (off-peak wise) it's only 2 trains an hour from Milton Keynes to/from Watford Junction (unless you want to travel on the slow stopping service), heading northbound both trains depart Watford within a few minutes of each other.

I hadn't thought of Bletchleyite's going via Aylesbury, we could easily drive there. May try that!

It's what I'd probably do. Aylesbury gets you slightly more services (in the peaks there are Aylesbury terminators) but at Vale Parkway the car park is a third of the price and you avoid the urban Aylesbury traffic, plus you get the civility of boarding at the origin.

Definitely Hatch End then H12. It's a pretty fast train all the way from Milton Keynes, the bus service is very frequent (every 10 mins) and it stops just over the road from Hatch End station.

And the H12 bus stop in Pinner is a bit closer to the museum than Pinner tube station too.

To complete this thread just thought I'd say that in the end we decided to walk to MKC and bought off peak day returns to Hatch End. £35.50 for the two of us using our Senior railcards, which I thought a very decent fare.

Took the 9:30 LNR* to Bushey, changed to Lioness line to Hatch End, easy to find bus stop for H12 to Pinner, (oldie bus passes) and short walk through the memorial park to the Museum. Arrived just after they opened at 11am.

If you remember seeing Heath Robinson's cartoons then interesting exhibition. Very nice cafe with excellent toasties.

Walked back across the park to catch the H12 back to Hatch End, then Lioness this time to Watford Junction and then LNR back to MKC. Very lucky with timing as had about five minutes to wait at both Hatch End and Watford Junction for a train.

* This was a very clean - almost new? - train - I think the number of the carriage started 450? But sad to see that someone had already graffitied the loo, which while it had been removed the ghost was still visible.

Thanks to everyone above for their advice for this trip.

It'll either have been a 730 or 350. The former are actually new, the latter are about 20 years old but have had a decent refresh including new carpets and seat foams/covers and so look new. The easiest differentiator is probably that the former are "walk through" whereas the latter have doors on the vestibule ends.

Also, if it was 4, 8 or 12 coaches it was a 350, if it was 3, 5, 6 or 10 it will have been a 730.

Thanks, it was 10 carriages, we watched as a 5 car pulled into MKC then a 5 car coming from London direction arrived and emptied of passengers when the two portions were joined together with a walkway between the two sections. And it was "walk through" not vestibules so looks to have been a new 730.
