Best way from chd - wrexham

A friend has just started college in Wrexham. He will be travelling from Chesterfield and wonders which is the best / cheapest / quickest route between the two.

Can anyone help?

You mention your friend has started college, do they hold a railcard (16-25) or eligible for one?

The most logical route would be Chesterfield - Manchester Piccadilly - Chester - Wrexham

I assume they have a railcard. If not I will quickly advice them to get one as they always pay for themselves very quickly.

Seeing your route, I thought the same way. However, is it possible / quicker / cheaper to go via Birmingham?

Travelling via Birmingham would roughly be the same journey time.

It all depends on what journeys your friend is undertaking, will it be day returns? Or period returns?

I would think you would struggle to beat a competitive price of £28.00 with railcard, £40.00 without for a return Chesterfield - Wrexham General, the prices given are on the basis of splitting at Stockport and Off Peak returns.

Travelling via Birmingham will be more expensive, unless you comit to Advances, but you lose flexibility.

Routes suggested by National Rail journey planners seem to be via Sheffield, stockport, Manchester or Knutsford to Chester.

So, if it is quicker via Brum, the fare might not be valid that way. "Any permitted" route fare (only the one). There are also XC Advance fares listed, but as I put tomorrow's date in it didn't suggest them!

It is about 20 mins quicker to Wrexham via New Street ( arr xx.10; dep xx.23) but similar times returning to Stockport route. However Raileasy won't show any fares via Birmingham - probably because the Chesterfield- Wrexham fare (set by EMT) is about £8 cheaper than the Chesterfield - Birmingham fare (set by XC!!).

If your friend doesn't mind fewer journey opportunities, it will be cheaper to travel via Derby and split at Tutbury & Hatton (£20.40 railcard total). Less frequent service but all trains Derby - Crewe stop there.

The prices I gave above were for Off Peak returns, not for Off Peak Day returns, but good find this may be helpful to the OP if travelling and retuning the same day.

Arriving at Stockport, it is sometimes quicker to get to Chester via Crewe (VT or AW).
It is certainly less tedious than the Knutsford route.
There is one through Crewe-Chester-Wrexham train in the evening (1810 ex Euston, 1956 from Crewe).

Went recently from Lincoln-Wrexham and it seemed to be much cheaper travelling via Derby & Crewe - I split ticket at Uttoxeter.
Did involve changing at Nottingham, Derby, Crewe and Chester though!
