Best value long-distance

Having recently travelled on a variety of operators such as Avanti, LNER, Hull trains and TPE, I am going to put it out there that Avanti standard premium, especially on refurbished 390s, is the best value for long distance rail travel. Comfy seats, plenty of room, nicer ambience, window aligned seats and the big advantage of 2 seats on their own. Many advantages of first with a reasonable uplift. Any challengers?

Fly to Germany and then take an ICE during the day and take the first class upgrade.

Our family trip (6 people) from Hamburg to Berlin came at £51.00. That’s total, not each. 1 hour 40 ish. Lovely trip.

Some kids in the mix but we had 6 reserved seats.

A Wick to Rosslare Fishguard Stena single (£57 without a railcard) and a Penzance to Belfast Cairnryan Stena return (£116) seem like good value. Granted, some of the itineraries seem quite long-winded – for the first one, the only route taking less than 28 hours I can find is changing at Inverness, getting the Sleeper to Crewe, then changing again at Llanelli for Fishguard, whilst the latter takes 23:55 if you're trying to do it as quickly as possible – but considering the length of the journeys that's to be expected and the length makes the journey worth the cost.

The seats aren't aligned with the windows, some of them are but not all of them are, but it's better than normal standard class of course.
