For me, equestrian - depending on how you want to define it (as a varied sport itself or as a category of individual sports). As for the latter, I do particularly like the racing.

For playing or watching is a good question. For playing I'd say badminton is about the only sport I've ever enjoyed.

Watching, ditto.

As for playing, horse riding is pretty much the only sport I do (or have ever done, for that matter). I'd like to give race riding a go, one day - but the only "racing" I've ever done was around poles in an arena as part of a gymkhana event!

I've had a go at table tennis before, though - alas, I never managed to maintain a streak of more than two hits!

Haven't tried anything else, unless you can count running a mile through the countryside in 10 minutes to catch a very infrequent bus service which had been on diversion to the next village over, with no prior information aside from a tiny notice plastered onto the bus stop, as some sort of athletic "human versus bus" event!

Motorsport, Boxing, Darts? Some people question whether the latter is actually a sport but it is, so there.

Love the above three but absolutely love my football.

This. Yet at the same time it feels like something is happening, but nothing is. I’d call Cricket my ‘2nd sport’, and I can happily watch a test match for 20 mins, go away, come back, watch another 20 mins and so on. There is also a bit of mental arithmetic involved too which is interesting.

Now, football is my favourite sport - I’m simply more emotionally invested in football - but I am almost at a point where I prefer watching a football match at home, but prefer watching the cricket live at the ground.

I think there will be more people who cycle than play football, but that doesn’t make cycling a more popular sport. Cycling is a mode of transport, as is driving. More people drive than play football or cycle, therefore saying cycling is a more popular sport than football because more people cycle is like saying because more people drive, motorsport must be considered the best sport or most popular sport.

This probably confuses the question somewhat. A more popular pastime? Possibly. More popular spectator sport? No chance.

99% of people on the planet walk, competition walking isn't a popular sport.

Best sport for what? Pure fun? Overall fitness? Toning certain specific muscles? Honing mental agility? Building a team that works together? Being exceptionally competitive? There's so many definitions of 'best'.

Personally, I enjoy cycling to keep fit, but not as something in which to be competitive. Does that make it 'sport' or 'not sport'?

Very much so. Can't wait for the new season.

Golf is my favourite because it's the first time I've actually been any good at a sport I like watching. I never was much good at football!

It's got to be football for me. I'm not competitive enough to play it competitively, but I'll happily have a kick about with others in a relaxed environment. I love watching games as well.

At this time of year I don't mind watching a bit of tennis though with the French Open and then Wimbledon later in June. In fact as I type this I've got ITV4 on with Djokovic about to start.

It is very much an acquired taste, but my favourite sport to watch is snooker. I play a bit too, although admittedly to an abysmally low standard.

Other good watches are test match cricket (again, not for everyone), rugby union (Six Nations particularly where I follow Wales), tennis (Wimbledon mainly) and even the Darts.

I have very much fallen out of love with football and it has got to the point where live matches bore me to tears. There are far too many prima donnas, mercenaries and loathsome personalities for my liking, including within the team I support. Let's just say I won't be watching the Euros!

Never have liked football, or rugby. I've always enjoyed badminton, though - and darts is pretty fun (although my aim hasn't always been the best in the past - carved several holes into walls aiming for bits of a dartboard!). Mr Google says pool is a sport, but I doubt the way I played it a few times a while ago would get me into a championship!

I don't know if it that much of an acquired taste as I find it so easy to watch at times, I used to watch it a lot when I was younger but haven't done in years however I happened to notice a recent final and a very close match which I watched to the end of the match. I think it's an oddly satisfying sport to watch but at the same time you can really feel the tension as a player lines up on a difficult shot then you hear that awful noise when it just misses going into the pocket.

In regards to the topic are we talking about watching or taking part or both? I'm a huge fan of cycling myself and spend a lot of time and effort at it but I've absolutely no interest in watching it, while I find some of the team tactics impressive I don't find there's much to see a lot of the time.

For watching it's motorsport for me particularly GT3 endurance racing, the Nurburgring 24 at the weekend was as mad as ever and I can't wait for Spa 24 which is my favourite race of the year.

Back when it was Jimmy White v Stephen Hendry in the World Championship final each year I followed Snooker a fair bit and would often be down one of the local snooker halls. Each year I was hoping for White to win.

I think there will be more people who cycle than play football...

I cycle much more than the average person but I do not cycle for 'sport'.

While many people would cycle recreationally (though not as many as those who do so as a mode of transport) I think only a tiny fraction of cycling could be considered participating in 'sport'; in contrast a lot of people play football.

For example in the first half of this week I expect to play with about 70 other people (only counting people playing in the same games as me, not counting people on adjacent pitches) and separately to that, I also expect about 60 people to be playing in games I've organised over the next couple of days.

I agree; I think @LSWR Cavalier is confusing recreational activities with sports. A recreational activity is not necessarily a sport. That said, defining when something is a sport is not always easy.

I suspect @Big Tim and @Philip Brown may have something to say about some omissions from the list of options.

I don't want to sound too critical, but the poll is fundamentally flawed for so many reasons. For example, someone may enjoy many sports and may struggle to pick one out specifically; others may prefer playing one sport but when watching might have a different preference.

Interesting that football is by far and away the majority of votes. If one was to base it off stereotypes, ”train fans” would be assumed to not be keen on football

I do watch a lot of football but i can't stand the premier league and all it's bombast and the rampaging elephant that is it's hype machine. Luckily these days there are umpteen other top flight leagues available on the telly...
