Best signals for a layout

In the process of building a new layout (only took me four years since moving house to get on with it) and an starting to think about having some signals.
From being the only one out there some years ago, Hornby's R406 primitive two aspect die cast signal has been superceded by some much more prototypical models, from Berko, Eckon and Traintronics to name a few.
Has anyone experience of using any of these signals, and are any recommended over others?

Assume you are interested in colour light signalling only from reference to the Hornby item. I have used Berko, but not for some years. Main problem is that the LEDs used in all model signal heads have a wide angle of view compared to the prototype and are usually too bright. There are different styles - I recall the Berko ones are of a style more 1950s/60s, so you may need to choose to match the period you are modelling?

I don’t have any multi aspect signals on my layout but a friend of mine uses CR signals on his N gauge railway (he works for Network Rail so he’s quite picky about signalling).
They also do 00 signals:
