Best retailer for digital Gold Card

Following on from this thread, where I reported on the problems a relative is having with Trainline not sending out the Gold Record Card for a Gold Card annual season...

...I am wondering whether anyone has experience of the best retailer to use when buying a Gold Card eligible season ticket. It should ideally be one that can be relied upon to send a Gold Record Card without needing prompting.

This is for a different relative than the one in the above thread, who also wants a Gold Card and has asked for my advice on which retailer to use. They would prefer it to be a retailer that offers the season ticket in sTicket format so that they don't need to carry an extra smartcard or paper season ticket.

As most third party retailers other than Trainline don't have the necessary licence to sell season tickets, I imagine it will be a TOC retailer that is recommended as the best option.

I have kept an eye out for card-based cashback deals but can't currently see any options. I know there's Topcashback and the like, but the only option that doesn't exclude season tickets I'm seeing is 1% for TfW. Better than nothing but I'd like to know how they are with sending out Gold Record Cards before recommending them to my relative.

I honestly never had issues with GTR when I did buy seasons.

If anything, they sent out Gold Cards and Record Cards overzealously, with child-rate and 16-17 Saver seasons.

Cashback notwithstanding, the best retailer should be a Ticket Office in the Gold Card Area as the Gold Card will be issued on the spot with no need to wait for it to arrive in the post.

Thanks, good to know.

Yes, that is what I have suggested to them too, but they live in an area where there are few ticket offices so it would be a bit of an inconvenience for them to go to one.

The relative has bought their Gold Card from GTR but still has no Gold Record Card despite buying the season 12 days before it started, and checking with them immediately after purchase and again after a few days to check that it is being sent.

It's apparently now with their 'Retail Team' for further investigation. They're keeping a log of all lost discounts on my advice so they can claim these costs back from GTR.

Having seen two relatives have problems with receiving Gold Record Cards from Trainline and GTR, and seeing the problems others have reported with LNER, I can only conclude that @CyrusWuff 's advice of going to a ticket office is probably the best bet for anyone intending on buying a Gold Card. It really shouldn't be this difficult in 2026!
