Best railtour names

UKRs “The Solent Witness” back in 2012 has always been a personal favourite of mine.

There have been some real crackers over the years, some of my personal favourites are:

- The Leuchars Aide (already mentioned earlier in the thread, but certainly my all-time favourite).
- Pathfinder's "The Taw & Tor Tourer", May 1990 (this one might be my second favourite).
- Past Time Rail's "The Brighton Breezy", February 2001
- Hertfordshire Railtours' "The Skirl o' the Bagpipes", March 1996 (plus its associated "sequels" of the same name)
- Class 20 Locomotive Society's "Power to the Tower", May 1989

and a recent favourite of mine, Intercity's "The Ayr Extension" from January last year

I'll add another vote for 'The Long Thin Drag', lucky enough to be on it all the way, the high point of all the railtours I have done in many ways. One of the highlights for me of coming out of Blea Moor Tunnel into a hailstorm.

UK Railtours give punning names to many of their tours. A few examples have been:
The Ayr Apparent
The Andover Fist
The Worcester Sorcerer
The Wymondham Willows

The Crompton Bulb.

This was a railtour in the 90s which consisted of a class 33 from London to Blackpool for the illuminations.
I was not on the tour itself but I did see it. I was on a train heading south into London which had stopped on route (can’t remember where exactly, possibly Rugby?) The tour came into the station and stopped next to my train.

Two old ladies sitting in the bay of seats behind me must have seen the tour’s name from a window sticker or somebody’s tour brochure. Whatever they saw it set off one of the oddest and most confused conversations I have ever heard.
Their conversation went thus:
That train is going to Crompton and Bulb.
Bulb? Where’s Bulb?
Don’t know. Must be somewhere near Crompton.

To mark the end of Class 73 operation by EWS, their final operational pair (73133/6) were booked to work a farewell tour. In the end 133 suffered a fault and had be to substituted with South West Trains’ 73109. The tour ran from Waterloo to Weymouth (out via Salisbury, return via Winchester) and was given the punny title ‘The Wey Out’, which as 133’s failure showed leaving them with just one left for the tour, they really were!

Going back to the OP, it’s a high risk strategy quoting a chingfinder tour before it’s been cancelled run.

If they were using one of the 69s that were built behind the iron curtain they could have gone for "Industria Diktat". It's a stretch, but no more than some of the others!
