Good morning everyone

I will be travelling from Chelmsford to Charlton at 1800 on a weekday, with a Network railcard, return same day.
Would a day return from Chelmsford to Stratford and then contactless be a better bet than a through ticket? I can go on the tube to N Greenwich and then catch the bus, or DLR then National rail, or Liz line then National Rail, all avoiding zone 1. Or is there anything I’ve not thought of?

Any suggestions gratefully received!
Thank you

Presume @andylikestrain's journey can be done cheaper than straightforwardly just using an Off Peak Day Travelcard at £22.75, with Network Railcard discount having been applied?

Agreed. No need to use contactless and gives flexibility about which route to use.

As a through fare, an off-peak day travelcard at £22.75 is needed, because of the 1600-1900 restriction on the off-peak day return.

It is in practice cheaper to buy the combination suggested by the original poster of an off-peak day return from Chelmsford to Stratford for £13.15, and the two contactless singles at £3.60 peak and £3.00 off peak from Stratford to Charlton avoiding Zone 1. There is no afternoon peak restriction on the outward leg of the off-peak day return from Chelmsford to Stratford.

Stratford to Charlton on Contactless avoiding Zone 1 can be made via DLR to Greenwich or Woolwich Arsenal and then by train to Charlton.

Chelmsford to Dartford costs £13.90 for an Off-Peak Day Return with restriction code B1 (valid from 09:30 with no evening restrictions). This is cheaper than any other option I can find. It's valid to stop short and start late at Charlton and would allow you to cross London via essentially whichever route you prefer.

Looking at the other fares involved, SE appear to have made a right pig's ear of Ovalising that journey. Don't be surprised if the CDR gets removed.

Thanks everyone. Only saw the last couple of posts after my trip, so lost out on the Dartford return trick. Saying that, on the way I got the tube to N Greenwich and then a bus!
