The humble EE507, as used in virtually everything SR based from the SUB/EPB/HAP and the thumpers to the 455 and 456, with an updated version of the same motor (manufactured by GEC but in the same factory in Preston) used in 317-322

Personally the slightly beefier EE546 used in the 73 and the REP gets my vote.

For diesel, it would be a tossup between a Valenta and a EE16CSVT

I'd say any Thames Turbo, 313s, 315s and all Desiros for me. I love the Desiros especially as they're pulling away, and when 313s and 315s are really giving it the beans at such a high speed.

For modern DMUs I would agree. I also like the 180s - a very distinctive sound when they go past at speed.

But there is nothing really to beat the cacophony of rattles, squeaks, shuddering, vacuum brake whooshes, exhaust resonances and diesel noises when travelling in an old BR Mk1 DMU (plus the banging from the bogie hunting they were prone to when running at speed on CWR, and the creaks from the seat springs as you bounced up and down due to the poor ride).

I have three favourites.

Class 60 (Because they sound like a GE Dash 8 and sound lovely to me!)
Class 319 (I love the sound of the traction motors)
Class 185 (I love the sound of the Cummins QSK19)

I have two answers for that. First of all despite that the 180/185/220/221/222 etc all use the Cummins QSK19. I prefer the Class 185 as in my opinion, is sounds more throaty to me .

My second reason and why I didn't list the Class 180 etc is because I didn't want to be greedy . But the Class 185 is my favourite because of its throaty sound it makes possibly due to the "stack" exhaust?
