Best And Worst First Class..

So from a point of

1. Price of ticket (inc ADV fares)
2. Amount of "free stuff" you get included
3. General Staff attitude (if there is First Class staff)
4. Stock, is it a proper first class or just a different colour seat etc :P

We have although I think it was months ago now. I couldn't say because I've only used VT and LM. For what it's worth VT is better but perhaps that's because I am lucky enough to live on the Wolves - Brum - Euston route

Worst 1st Class is NXEA (surprise surprise)
On 170s/317/5/6/8s/321s/360s 1st class is basically the same seats in a different colour, no 1st class staff, no free stuff. 1st class on 317/7s has nice seats but no staff and they won't be around after this week anyways.
On the LHCS the 1st class seems run down and has a very spooky ambience like an abandoned mansion house, but staff are friendly

Low cost tickets

I think Southern probably take worst first class for the bit at one end of the Electrostars that doesn't even have a door and always has standard class passengers cluelessly walking into it. The section at the other end does have a door though I think.

Southeastern has got to be the worse, all you get is a seat, which just has first class on it. The FC area isnt closed off from the rest of the carriage either and you get nothing free.

FCC on the KGX-PBO route. Often the inner doors are jammed open, nothing free or use of a lounge and during the day there's no RPI so FC is used willy-nilly by school kids. Oh and the FC area is right over the wheels so you get shaken about.

XC (at least on PBO-CBD) isn't much better, doors aften jammed open, the free trolley is often absent and FC is quite 'busy' with XC staff!

You can usually differentiate 1st class by a simple addition of a headrest cover on the seat and a great big '1' on the window. That's about it!

VT Voyagers have appalling first class; 221s vibrate and rattle enough as it is without the sound of all the glasses and crockery on the tables contributing to the racket - and the seats are rock hard. On a Voyager I actually prefer standard hock:

TPE 185s have much better seats, you may not get many freebies but when you're on a First Advance that was cheaper than most people paid for standard you can't complain

Comfort, privacy (ideally an individual seat) and quiet are my reasons for liking 1st class - i.e. more of a "living room" feel.

At-seat service is nice, but not essential.

Im not very impressed with Virgin first class, ans the staff I have found are often completely disinterested. Having said that Due to where I live there is not much choice. I use London Midlands first class, thats ok, the best was Wrexham and Shropshire, Their first class was supurb, sadly now history !

I know one thing for certain SouthEastern have the worst first class and thats not just because you don't get freebies...

I once caught a declassified 465/9 on a stopping service to Gravesend, now all I have to say is that the only difference between First Class and standard is a cloth on the seats head rest, and that's literally it.

Seats on 170201-208 are some of the most comfortable i have ever sat on. Not seen them on anything else. Probably where very expensive. Often wonder what happened to the 15 or so that where removed from each unit when the units had extra standard class added & buffet removed. Will have to investigate that one.

I have heard they went to SWT when they refurbished their 158/159s but am willing to be corrected.

I found the coffee ok, and remember that on advances, the cheapest upgrade I found was something like 60p, and generally its only a couple of quid.

Its reasonable on weekdays, altohugh a shame you cant get some crisps/chocolate, and fizzy frinks free, but you can order some noms off the all day menu, which is pretty good, and reasonably priced, and something to do in the 2 hours from london to nottingham.

365s are almost the same, but I think the seat pitch is a bit longer. The only other noticeable difference is colour. Really, what you would be paying for is the partition and that's about all. At least on 317s you get armrests.

365s have power doors (and some sets have no internal door open buttons, relying on a movement sensor that can fail!) but do have totally different seats, with tables, arm rests and individually controlled halogen lights.

I'd say that of the FCC GN fleet, the 365s and 321s are pretty good - compared to the 317s that may have arm rests, but the seats have nearly all collapsed and there's only a couple of seats with tip-down trays - with no actual tables. I know there's a real mix on the 319s and we've already described the 377s.

If FCC takes the 317/7s, I wonder what they'll do with them as they have a pretty luxurious interior even for standard class.
