I am going to Berlin in January, never been before, so if anyone has any suggestions of things to do then I'd be very interested to hear them

Me too in May, though I'm only stopping one night before travelling on to Leipzig so it would need to be evening suitable and non rail recs would be appreciated too

I'm not sure if either of you are football fans but if you are a visit to a Hertha Berlin game at the Olympic Stadium would be one thing to do. Not been myself but a a friend of mine who has been to around 1000 stadiums rates it as his best one. Packed to the rafters with history

The Checkpoint Charlie museum is fascinating, as is the small section of the wall still standing. There are also some excellent bus tours, which realy bring home the east/west split.
And the Hauptbahnhof is amazing

story of Berlin, including visit to Nuclear Bunker

Tempelhof Airport

Staasi Prison

Soviet War Memorial

Trains, boats & planes

Avoid Kilkenny Irish Pub in S-Hackescher Markt & Irish Pub in Europa Centre as they are both expensive rubbish.

Curry 36 at U.Mehringdamm is apparently the most popular place for Currywurst in Berlin

DDR museum near Alexandaplatz. A small and fascinating insight into life in the former East Germany. Quite hard to believe that people lived like this in Europe until just over 20 years ago!

The " Topography of Terror Documentation Center" (museum and memorial to the victims of the Nazis)

Not beening born then I never fully appreciated the horrors and evils perpetrated by them until I visited the museum last year. Absolutely worth a visit

Visit Berlin Hauptbahnhof - one of the great modern railway stations in the world.

It's stunning. I recommend exploring all levels.

As for Berlin, it's an extremely interesting place and there is plenty to do.

The TV Tower next to Alexanderplatz station is well worth a visit. It is expensive, but the views on a clear day are great.

We got a three day ticket and travelled quite extensively including Potsdam and Spandau which are quite green and historic.

Prenzlauerberg - now trendy , old Eastern area with some remnants of a squatted and alternative recent past.

East Side Gallery (wall segments as artwork)

House of the Conference , Wansee - (where Eichman and others planned the Final Solution) - depressing yet interesting.
